The derogatory word used to label someone who is new to a particular game/forum/server/where-ever. Many people misuse the word, insulting new members by calling them 'n00b's.

The word 'newb' is sometimes confused with this term - 'newb' standing for 'new beginner'. Whereas a n00b means one of two common terms.

1) A new member who is acting stupidly.
2) A member who is acting stupidly, regardless of level and/or experience.

1) "Lol, u level 1 N00b stfu pwned."
2) "Wow, that guy's been here for 4 years and he still acts like a N00b."

In a group, the term newbie is often used for a new user who asks allegedly "dumb" questions (typically questions which are clearly answered in a list of rules or frequently asked questions) and whose behaviour does not conform to the accepted standards of the livewire community (often to the point of rudeness), to the consternation or amusement of the old hands. Due to their inexperience, these newcomers are sometimes picked on and may not feel welcome. If they are friendly, they tend to learn more and stay; if not friendly, they tend to be "kicked out" or ostracized.
It also establishes a hierarchy, as more complex forms of leet are increasingly unreadable to the untrained eye.
Referring to regular members as newbies is often considered to be highly insulting. The implication is that they are behaving as if they do not know the rules when in fact they have had more than sufficient opportunity to learn them.

When leaving comments on your corrections of "n00b" mistakes, try not to make hostile comments about the n00b's ignorance
