How do I keep my LiveWire account secure?
Pay attention to LiveWire URLs:
One of the most common ways of having your password stolen is to enter it into a fake login page. It's easy to build a page that looks like the real LiveWire login page, but instead of logging you in, you'll be sending your password off to somebody who just can't wait to steal your points and use your account to cause trouble. To combat this, always check the URL in the address bar before you type in your login details. If it's not one of the following addresses, it isn't an official LiveWire page:
http://www.golivewire.com
http://www.golivewire.net
http://www.peeranswers.com
http://www.showmember.com
http://www.peersupportforum.com
Cookie Storage:
LiveWire uses small pieces of information stored on your computer to make using the forums a little easier. These "cookies" store your password so you don't have to log in every time you view a new page. For people with their own computer, this isn't a problem. However, if you share your computer with others, it's important that you:
- Don't store your password into your browser's "password memory" function;
- Don't write your password into a text file so you can remember it;
- Always log out when you've finished using LiveWire.
Password Choice:
Good passwords are between eight and twenty characters long. The perfect password would contain lower case, upper, numbers and a punctuation mark or two. Never choose a password that appears in the dictionary, and avoid using personal information as the password as well. If you're having trouble thinking of a password, try using this password generator.
Change Your Password Often:
It is recommended that you change your password every thirty days. While this means more work for you, it does ensure that anybody who has been using your account on the sly for the past few weeks no longer has access. Make sure you follow the step above about making a good password.
Regular Computer Scanning:
There are programs that may be lurking on your computer just waiting to steal your passwords. This puts not only your LiveWire account at risk, but every other account you have on the internet too. It's good practice to scan your computer once a week with an antivirus program (if you don't have one, try out AVG Anti-Virus - it's free) and a spyware remover (if you don't have one, try out Spybot: Search & Destroy - also free). This minimises any threat of viruses or spyware and keeps your entire computer secure.
Remember that your password is like the front door key to your house. You wouldn't leave your door key lying around, so take the same attitude with your password.
