What is Emergency Help (eHelp)?
The Emergency Help system (eHelp) is a fast, free, and effective method of receiving good quality peer support direct to your LiveWire account or e-mail inbox. It is one of the cornerstones LiveWire is built upon! The system is considered to be reserved for the 'more serious and urgent' issues that users may be going through. Since only Peer Support Leaders have the ability to respond, the quality of responses tend to be higher and much more thought-out, as opposed to normal forum responses, which tend to be of lower quality.
How do I access eHelp?
The first way is via the toolbar. If you look to the left/right of your screen, at the very top, directly below the 'Search' box, you'll see a small cross image ( ). Once you click that, you'll be taken to the Emergency Help Resource page. If you look to the far right, you'll see a green box with the text "Get eHelp" inside of it.
The second way is via the main page. If you look directly below the large 'LiveWire' logo at the top, you will see the red cross that is shown above. Once you click that, you'll be taken to the Emergency Help Resource page. If you look to the far right, you'll see a green box with the text "Get eHelp" inside of it.
What type of information should I enter into the boxes?
We ask that you be as descriptive as possible! If you are expecting good quality responses, the more we have to work with, the more you will receive exactly that. Your titles should be short, but descriptive. Some support leaders like to stick to certain subjects, so if you can grasp the subject material in the title, you will likely gather more of those types of support leaders.
The message content itself should be in much greater detail. We don't need you to put in irrelevant information, but the more your message details, the better we will be able to understand exactly what it is you are going through.
How long will it take to receive a reply?
Submissions to the eHelp system are typically answered fairly quickly. However, you should remain patient, as it could take a from a few hours to a few days to receive the replies. Keep in mind the members who respond to these eHelps are young volunteers who are over worked!
When you do receive replies, you will often times receive multiple responses. If you submitted your eHelp from a guest position, your responses will be emailed directly to your account. If you submitted your eHelp from a registered position, your responses will be sent in private message form directly to your account.
Who answers the eHelps?
Your eHelp submissions are handled by the best LiveWire has to offer as far as support goes. As previously mentioned, the eHelp system is completely restricted to only those members which have been recognized as Peer Support Leaders and approved by the moderators of LiveWire.
However, please remember that while support leaders have shown extensive skills at providing
peer support, they are not trained professionals and you should not substitute help from psychiatrists, psychologists, doctors or gynecologists in
favour of help from a support leader.
What sorts of things can I get help for?
The requirements for your eHelp submission to remain in the system are pretty simple. If you're going through a crisis that requires serious peer support, your submission is welcomed. Questions relating to relationships, sexual activities, health, hygiene, depression, drugs, eating disorders, self harm, school, friends, and family are all reoccurring themes we see and accept in the system.
However, there are times when your eHelp may be removed for a variety of reasons. For example, if you submit an eHelp that is technical in nature (computer help), website in nature (blocking a user), or simply not up to the standard of seriousness that we like to keep the system at, your submission will very likely be removed. If this happens to you, you're encouraged to use the forums to seek the help you needed.
Note: LiveWire simply cannot discuss the topic of suicide (on the forums, or in eHelp). If you submit an eHelp regarding suicide support, we will have no choice but to remove the submission. If you are feeling
suicidal, we can only encourage you to use various free hot lines. The numbers are: 1-800-784-2433 (USA), 08457-909090 (UK), and 1-800-232-7288 (Canada).
What is the feedback/rating system?
Our Support Leaders are always looking for constructive criticism regarding the advice they give, and the feedback/rating system accommodates that need. We want our support leaders to know how their advice helped you, so we strongly encourage you to utilize the feedback feature. Please, if a support leader is nice enough to take time out of their day to try and assist you, take time out of yours to let them know how they did.
