My periods have been irregular for years but recently they have gone completely. Does anyone know if this can cause infertility or anything else?

It's hard to say. There a few reasons that could happen. How old are you?

And just to be safe I would suggest talking to your doctor.

I assume it's because i'm slightly unerweight. Sorry if i didn't make that clear. I have regular check ups with a psychiatrist and doctor but not sure if i want to tell them.

It's nothing to be ashamed of. If you've ever noticed when you go to the doctor for checkups they tend to ask you if your period is regular, it's something they need to know.

And I don't know how much underweight you're talking. I know someone who is/was anorexic, and she didn't have her period for quite some time because of the weight loss, and her organs began shutting down, but that's a more extreme case.

Get it looked at, though.

I'm not seriously underweight. I'm not embaressed to tell my doctor but i don't want to have to attend a unit for eating disorders. And they could make me if i tell them. I just want to know if it can cause problems conceving in the future.

that's not slightly underweight. That is seriously underweight. Your body has stopped ovulating because you have so little fat that you couldn't keep a baby warm/nutritioned. If it's been more than 3 periods, you're medically anorexic. You can have weakened bone structure due to this, which will make it harder for you to concieve later in life, and can also lead to osteoporosis. Also it puts you at higher risk for miscarriages and premature birth. You can also develop heart problems from  being severely underweight. If you want to learn more, gopggle is just full of information like http://www.anred.com/toc.html . And if you just want to talk, I can do that too.

if you actually have an eating disorder, and you arent that underweight, then they wont send you to a clenic. they only do that in extreme situations where the person is going to starve to death or something.

If you have private healthcare in England and you're bmi is less than 17.5, you have stopped mensturating and you already see a pschiatrist chances are they will make you got to a clinic atleast as an out-patient. I really don'y want to risk that.

Its never good for your periods to stop so I suggest you go and talk to your doctor about it.

It can be caused by a number of things including:

  • low body weight
  • low body fat
  • physical stress
  • emotional stress (exams, school, family problems etc)
  • nutritional inadequacy
  • hormonal changes
  • high intensity training
  • long duration training
  • pregnancy
  • medication

Without really knowing whats causing it, there isn't a lot of advice I can offer you. Its possible that it can affect your fertility as clearly something in your cycle is going wrong.

Obviously, if its caused by low body weight/fat (possibly you have an eating disorder or aren't getting enough of the right nutrients in your diet), eating more healthy and making sure your diet is more balanced should help you gain weight and eventually, your periods should start again. Equally, if you're very over weight, your periods can stop and you'll need to lose weight. Again, things like too much exercise have a clear solution - do less of it.

If you are on any medication, its probably an idea to have a look at the side effects. Usually if you type the name into Wikipedia or Google, you'll find tons of pages that list them. If you do find something that could be causing it, don't suddenly stop. Go and talk with your doctor first.

There are also lots of medical conditions that could have caused it. Any abnormalities with your vagina or uterus will affect periods although its more likely to be something to do with your ovaries (or so I'm told). As I've already said though, your doctor will be able to tell you more.

Your doctor may put you on birth control pills as it'll regulate your periods while they try and find out whats wrong. You may also need an ultrasound, blood tests and a vaginal exam, it all depends on what your doctor thinks may be wrong.

    Good luck :)

I've just come of the pill. I'm not looking for answers on how to get my periods back, i know eating more would do that.
