Situations like these are best settled in one way. Be vocal. Waiting in situations like these often leads to you missing your chance or otherwise being disappointed. The best way to go about these things are simple just to bring them up. There isn't anything bad that can come out of you simply sitting down with him and telling him that you like him and you want to get to know him better. When you phrase it like that, what is he going to say? He probably won't deny getting to know you better unless he is a complete jerk. (In which case he probably isn't good enough for you anyways.)
I see it all the time. You wait and you wait until the last possible second to talk to the person about it, and by then it is too late in some way or another. This happened to me last year with a girl I liked, and I have regretted it ever since. I walked with her every day after 2nd hour, and I never quite had the courage to ask her. Someone else did.
