ok look i'm going to try to stop this right here and now.

yes, a fetus is alive.

It doesn't understand object permanency so thus it can't be alive.

No, it's not required for an organism to be alive.  It is, however, required for an organism to make its way into my sphere of caring which is a far more meaningful distinction in my humble opinion.

Spooner is also recorded by Littlewood as having proposed a toast to "The Boar's Head" (a pub), but this was emphatically not a spoonerism.

Does an organism need to understand the concept of object permanency to be considered alive?

Not to be "alive", but to be a conscious human yes.

Context aside (because arguing with abs is never going to end well for anyone), the typo in the poll options makes for some weakly appreciable irony.

Object  Permanence

The understanding that objects exist even when they are not directly observed.

I don't think that an organism has to know this to be alive, maybe to be considered intelligent.

edit
Unless by alive you mean "live" as in Living a life, and not just basic biological functions... you are such a puzzle absy. :P

there IS a difference between LIVING and ALIVE you know, right?

a LIVING organism does not necessarily have to be what we consider alive. plants are living, some organic fabrics are living, however we do not consider it killing when we destroy these things.
the same is for a fetus. They are combinations of nutrients and living tissue (much like the yolk and "white" of eggs). Sure, they are "living" but ALIVE? Hardly. they do not have functioning brains or organs until the third trimester (and by that time the "fetus" is more like a "developing baby".

to be ALIVE. one must have brain activity and organ function. without these, one is dead. (or merely a composition of living tissue and nutrient substances)

A fetus at the early stages of pregnancy can be compared to simpler things. A liberal approximation could be made to that of a dog. No one bombs veterinary hospitals when someone puts down a dog.

So now we should just have our girls give birth and after a few years when they don't want the kids they should just wait a few months and then kill them?

I love you abs. This is awesome.

Ever kill a cockroach? Ever eat a cow? Ever jack off into a tissue instead of ejaculating into a fertile twat? Murderer.
