try http://192.168.0.1/

I was also advised to try that my the guy I bought it off, but to no success.

Hmm, in windows under network connections, and see if your default NIC is on, and connected.

Also, reset your router if it is the NIC was connected, and try http://192.168.0.1/ again.

It's connected and I followed your advice.  Still not working.

Huh.. =/ . Well, sometimes on my D-Link router, I just unplugged it, waited for a few seconds, and plugged it back in. Then let it load, for a minute or two, and then try and access the page.

Try that a couple times, (3 at the most).

Hmm, nothing is working so far, which in my opinion is very odd.  I found the following in the one-page guide I have:

"To connect to the router, your computer needs to be
configured to obtain an IP address automatically via DHCP. For
instructions on how to do this, please see Appendix C in the
Reference Manual on the GearBox CD for 54 Mbps Wireless Router."

I have no GearBox CD.  How would I go about doing this?

Unless you (or someone else) has intentionally set your computer to use a static ip.. chances are very good that you are already using DHCP.

The following assumes Windows XP Home/Pro, XP 64, unsure about Vista... and note that the process for older versions is not dissimilar, but not exactly the same.

Easiest way that I'm aware of to check..

If it's off, and you'd like to turn it on... note that I am unaware of how to do so from the command prompt, and that I'm sure there are faster ways than what I'm showing.  Some, I'm sure, I'm also unaware of.. and others depend on user preferences, the myriad of which I'd rather not address.

And while we're on the topic of IP addresses..

Make sure that you're in the same network as your router.

If your router is (expected to be) 192.168.1.1, then make sure that your ip is 192.168.1.something.  If it's 192.168.0.1, then make sure that your ip is 192.168.0.something

Also, while probably obvious.. do make sure that you don't have the same ip as your router.  Some default to .1, some to .254.  So long as you don't statically configure your ip to either of those, you shouldn't have any issue.  As the mention of defaults might hint at.. do also try to connect to it at .254

And..

In regard to resetting.  I've seen several different methods.. some of which do/don't work depending on the router you have.  Can't hurt to try all the ones I've seen...

Try pressing the button.  Try holding it in til the lights on it start flashing.  Try unplugging it, waiting around a minute, and plugging it back in.

And finally, try unplugging it, waiting around a minute.. and plugging it back in while holding the reset button in.  Continue holding it in til the lights start flashing or somewhere around 30 seconds has passed.. whichever comes first.

I should clarify - I currently have no previous network infrastructure.  Minus the router, it's my computer connected to the Internet through a USB modem.

Anyway, Network Connections.

No 'Local Area Network' there... the Tiscali Broadband is my Internet connection and the 1394 Connection is my Ethernet socket.  Following your steps, the IP address is already automatically obtained.

Also, new development.  Whenever I try to set up a new network, I get an error message... "An error occurred during configuration of the network on this computer."  Well, that's helpful.

Huh, well the I394 is not an actual network adapter... I think. Try reinstalling your Ethernet card, and then try connecting to your router. Let me know if that changes anything.

1394 is short for IEEE 1394, the specification for the connection more commonly known as FireWire. (reference)

So, your main problem seems to be that your computer is completely unaware that you have an ethernet nic.

In my experience, the best way to change that is to install the needed drivers.

Whether it's an onboard or expansion nic, did you happen to get any sort of installation cd with it?  Chances are that it'll have what you need.  And if it doesn't, it would be good to know the model / manufacturer.. as you should most definately be able to find the driver needed in the driver/support section of their website.

Note: if it's onboard, the driver may be labled something closer to 'Chipset' than 'ethernet / nic'.

How do I check what make / model my Ethernet card is?  In the Device Manager everything is reportedly working fine.

OK, finally, some progress!

Somehow I managed to get another connection in Network Connections - I've named it 'Ethernet' for lack of a better name.  DHCP is enabled, IP address is obtained automatically, etc.  However... I still can't log in to the router.

Grr.

Is it an onboard or expansion card?

If it's an expansion card, I'm afraid I don't know.  And I'm sure it's hardly the advice you're looking for.. but nics are getting very cheap.. just newegg'd a 10/100/1000 at $25.

If it's onboard..

.. and if your system is a custom build.. would you happen to know the make/model of your board?  The board manufacturer's website should have a support/drivers section with what you'd need.. and, if not, google can be a great help.

.. or if it's not custom, check the site of whoever assembled the computer.  Hopefully, your tower will have some sort of marking / sticker to indicate what type it is.
