I had already posted this topic in Race, Ethnicity & Nationality, but was dissatisfied with the replies. This is not for school or anything, just personal interest.

What is your opinion on this issue?
Were you aware this issue existed?
Is it important to you?
Do you believe it is more/less harmful than racism between people of different races?
Do you consider it racism at all?
And most importantly, do you think it is okay and why?

I might share my opinion and personal accounts of racism among people of the same race later in the thread.

What is your opinion on this issue?
I think it is a little silly.  Racism, and racial abuse, is referred to by slander according to differentially, usually by race.

Were you aware this issue existed?
Yes. I was aware that it existed, although I usually believe that it is due to 'Wannabes' and gangsters.  Also the African/American influence upon our society is increasing this problem's rate of apparency

Is it important to you?
Not particularly, because most people would and should discard single race racism.

Do you believe it is more/less harmful than racism between people of different races?
Much the latter, because as I stated earlier, most people reject this kind of abuse.

Do you consider it racism at all?
Interesting question.  It all depends on what you define as 'racism'.  If you believe it is abuse directed towards those out casted by race/ethnicity/religion, then no.  But, however, if you believe racism is outcast ism and just generally, abuse, then yes, it would be.

And most importantly, do you think it is okay and why?
As a friendly joke, or stupid greeting, such as "Hey whitey!" Then, perhaps, yes.  However, I am strongly against abuse of any kind, so I believe that if it is serious, then it is NOT ok.

What do you think of these personal accounts?

I was on the bus with my Korean friend yesterday when the topic of work came up in conversation. We were discussing/complaining about our past and present managers when she shook her head and cursed, "bloody Asians" while referring to one of her previous bosses. This friend of mine was adopted into an Australian family (at birth, I think), and has had little interaction with other Asians and the Korean way of life, with the exception of her sister who was also adopted from Korea.

Another possible example of racism amongst people of the same race is on the year 12 dress-up day last year, where one student dressed up in a Ku Klux Klan suit. Most people were shocked to see this guy walking around school in this suit – that is, until they discovered that the guy was in fact African. I overheard many students telling friends who were seeing the suit for the first time that “it was okay because he was black”. As far as I know, no teachers confronted him about the issue.

What is your opinion on this issue?

My opinion on the issue? It doesn't exist! Racism must, by definition, involve more than one race (although the word "race" is in itself an ambiguous term). Here are two alternate definitions of racism, derived from what I would consider a relatively credible source (namely "answers.com"):

1.  The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

I suppose it is conceivable that a person could possess feelings of animosity towards a member of the same race. However, this is extremely rare and could probably be traced to a psychological dysfunction or an exceptionally uncommon set of circumstances.

Were you aware this issue existed?

I was, but I don't believe "racism" is an accurate term to describe this phenomenon.

Is it important to you?

Prejudice in all its forms needs to be addressed, so I suppose the answer is yes. Moreover, this "in-group" racism you are referring to is most likely a direct result of the suicidal concept of multiculturalism which is being forced upon the peoples of the Western world.

Do you believe it is more/less harmful than racism between people of different races?

Definitely the latter, as it is far less frequent than "conventional" racism.

Do you consider it racism at all?

It exists, but it is certainly not racism.

And most importantly, do you think it is okay and why?

Anything which promotes irrational animosity and division between people should not be acceptable. I'm not sure that this is your most important question, though.

Anyway, thanks for the interesting post. It really got me thinking.

Definition two (I got the same definition from Dictionary.com) could be used to describe racism within the same race. The two examples I posted could both be considered "discrimination or prejudice based on race" as the definition does not state whether discrimination must be directed towards another race for it to be considered racism. Therefore, one can assume racism can occur within the same race.

Thanks for the reply. Pity I haven't had many of those, though.

Racism is one of the most disgusting things in existance.  Especially this mockery of black culture the media has taken.  It glorifies violence, drugs, gangs, and sexual predation.  Not only that, it helps to make the black race an underclass.  Every "ghetto" piece of crap bought by a person strengthens corporate hold on the image of blacks as stupid, violent, apes that are drug addicts and criminals.  Every time someone buys into this, especially a black man, a black man somewhere loses his chance at a future because of the stereotype image others glorify.

The most disgusting of them all are the young black males who play into this image.  They like to think that by wearing "black" clothes and using "black" imagery that they're helping their race fight the white man, but in reality, they're giving their money to white executives that hire those shitty rappers to dance for them.  They're nothing but tools to make money, that in turn keeps the entire black race down.  Honest black men and women are being put down by this sham and their fellow blacks that buy into it.  A white executive is snorting coke off a male, underage, Brazilian whore every time a rapper goes gold again.

I agree completely. I have met a fair few intelligent indigenous people, but the type that most people see are the ones who sit on the streets and drink alcohol, and so people assume that is how all indigenous people are and their reputation is spoilt for the ones that actually do something with their lives.

I guess I'm lucky I don't look like a typical indigenous person. Stereotypes work well for me in that respect. People see white skin; they assume I'm not indigenous and they take me seriously because of it.
