My friend spent ten years working saving for college. If you want it, you can do it. It just might take a while.

Listen to me. As long as you have family.. then money doesn't matter. If your dad has supported you all these years, then yes, to help HIM and to help your mum why dont you try getting a PART TIME job? Just to pay for yoru studies? Dont be scared, EVERYBODY does it. Working part time is normal, hell.. i have to find a job soon too to pay for uni.So please.. dont fear. Also, you DONT have to go to a good school to get a great education. Its *you* who puts in the work, your teachers dont write the exam answers for you... *you* do, so its *you* who must work hard. You can work hard at ANY school. I know people who go to the best schools and fail. My brother went to a very bad school and now he works for the british government because he spent an hr or two reading each evening and working for his studies,. YOU CAN DO IT. Its not a war, its not life or death, its not a disease.. your not dying, your families fine! Enjoy YOUR life, enjoy every second of it and dont be afraid to get a party time job to pay for college... its perfectly natural, its the right thing to do. Your dads helped you so much... so pay him back by getting a good education and getting a lil job :)

You can get fee waivers for all college entrance exams (SAT, ACT) from your guidance office, and these same fee waiver cards let you apply to virtually all schools for free. So, you got the test and the application done. If you need tutoring you're probably out of luck, but if you let a teacher know you need help, one of them WILL get you a test review book, I'm sure. Now...as far as getting into college...Harvard (not joking) is really good about kids with family income less than 60k. If they offer your major, this should be your goal. Your financial situation does NOT separate you from other applicants. You MUST fill out the CSS/FAFSA forms (financial aid) when you apply, and when certain colleges see this, they will match your need through loans/scholarships/work-study if they want you badly enough. WHAT GRADE ARE YOU IN? There are a few summer programs that I know of that are totally free or at least free for kids who can't afford it, and they would really fluff up your college application. Many elite schools have programs like Harvard does that reallllly help out smart low-income students if they are U.S citizens or at lease green-card holders (permanent residents). Columbia U and Brown seem to have programs like this. Also see (for NYS schools), the HEOP program here: http://www.highered.nysed.gov/kiap/COLLEGIATE/HEOP/introduction_to_heop.htm Post edited at 4:59 pm on May 18, 2007 by Krelian393
