Well, i've been reading about this a bit, and it really seems interesting.

its really amazing how, thousands of years ago, before the invention of telescopes and chartographs and astrographs, etc. these people could predict things down to the day is truly amazing...

http://db.arts.usf.edu/data/countdowntoextinction/reader.asp?n=mayancalendar

they believed that their creater, the First Father, had passed through the "dark rift" just as the sun will do when it passes through the center of the solar system [which happens only every 26,000 years]
also at this time, the earth will complete a wobble, which also takes roughly 26,000 years to complete. thus, this is a truly rare phenomenon.

bla bla.. read the article. its really very gripping stuff.

from the article...
"So this date was not picked by accident and the frightening thing about it is that 63 million years ago, or exactly 1 Alautun, coincides with the extinction of the dinosaurs in the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction, not to mention every other animal species larger than a loaf of bread."

I just find it weird that the Mayan's mysterious, nostradamus like prophet, Pacal Votan could have picked the EXACT day, dec 21 2012. all those years ago that these astronomical events would occur...

what do you think about:
1) the prophecy
2) just the sheer amazing understanding of the solar system to have come up with that exact date, and WHAT would actually happen

[note, the date was given in the mayan calander, which archeaologists had to decode and decypher. however the dates of cooincidence were discovered AFTER that]

[some interesting facts about votans prophecies:

he predicted a 20 year period of hate, invasion, war, and extreme suffering. this period landed on the same 20 years as hitler, the holocaust and WWII

he predicted 9-11 - a time of great things falling victim to hate, and the subsequent invasion of iraq - a response, an answer, - and put them within THEIR time frames...

there were MANY others, i just dont have the resources nor time right now..]

So we are going to die in 2012, on that exact day? For sure this time huh?  Because they have been wrong before. Maybe I should just stop going to school or something... lol...

Why would they try to warn us, if there's no way we can stop it?

ha, well, if you had read it it says most likely that, OR. some speculate some major event or change in our world and/or solar system..

the other dates are from weirdo cults with their own stupid ideas about the world.

ANCIENT mayans predicting astrological events to the DATE... is pretty impressive, and i think calls for a closer look... especially since the last extinction, the dinosaurs happened 63 million years ago... and that cooincides with the date of the solar allignment and the earths "wobble" completion...

So were really going to die, AHHH? I found this from nasa http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/transit/venus0412.html

Apparently it also states that 2012 is when a transit of venus will occur. Everyone keeps bringin up this date, there has to be something speacial about it. Im afraid now, thanks!

2012 says that a new "shift" in the earth will happen, just something that will enlighten us, possibly visitors from other worlds. The mayan caldner doesn't predict extinction dates but rather "shifts" in which the earth goes through a new stage in its life. Usually it's a good shift. 2012 is just going to be extraordinary.

It doesn't have to be an extinction.  What if it was just a time for the Mayans to set new resolutions for their society?  Like our New Year.  Of course maybe we're going to pass through a massive trail of space debris and be totally wiped out.  Whichever, who cares?  It's an incentive to live a good life.

It is pretty spooky- especially since there are many other ancient prophecies from all over the world which also predict the end times will occur soon.

no, it was a prophecy 26,000 years in the making lol not a new year... it is said to have a direct correlation to the position of the sun in the solar system and the earths rotational axial position..

the sun will pass through what is known as the Dark Rift. in their culture. their First Father passed through this rift and was met by the evil creatures who dwelled in it. they challenged him to a game, then deceived him and cut his head off..

the mayans have a game. they hit a small ball and try to get it into an equal sized ring that is hung on a wall. it is said that the ball is the sun and the ring is the rift.

it is also said that the [the best player, or the loosing teams worst player, its not really known] would be decapitated, as a sacrifice.
in their scripture there is a ball with a head, the head of the devlish inhabitants of the dark rift. from its mouth speaks the words of "death"

that is why it is thought to be a time of "rebirth" after our own extinction...

also the fact that 1 alautun ago, [63 million years] the dinosaurs became extinct due to solar allignements and climate occurances...

though it is possible it is a time for enlightenment, and i sure hope it is... i doubt that what votan had predicted... he predicted a doomsday.

Then again, people have been wrong about the whole doomsday scenario millions of times. So we will just do the countdown thing, and most likely watch nothing happen.

of course lol there have been COUNTLESS accusations of doomsday [the most ignorant and, well, stupid was Y2K lol]

but they were just religious cults with only the idea that it will probably end soon, and creepy people who claimed to be prophets, guessing at a time...

however, this, in my opinion, carries some weight that the others didnt...

not that i believe it 100%, just that i dont think we should dismiss it..

Well sure there have been a lot of silly prophecies that didn't come true- but there have also been some that have been remarkably accurate.  Look up St. Malachy’s predictions about the Popes- he correctly predicted each one- right up to Pope Benedict. And he says there will be only one more after Pope Benedict who will see the end of the Catholic church. I think that's pretty damn scary.
