because of a prophecy that THEY had. they were smart in the ways of astronomy...

200 years before their fall, votan got a prophecy of GRAVE danger... he said that there would be a time of great drought and little food. for some reason, they abandoned their cities and went.. some where..

they then returned and lived for a while...however soon there was a major dought which caused their food supply to diminish.
some say the other tribal regions started wars with the mayans, who were then unfit to defend their city..

heres a link.. just because something FELL doesnt mean they were stupid.
for example... ROME.. now, i know your not going to tell me that you think the romans were ignorant, at least in the ways of science and architecture, yet they still fell.

If we're all going to die and there's nothing we can do to stop that, why even think about it?    Because most of us have never seen or done anything significant?  Because most of us are trapped and worthless slaves who have never actually lived?  Hmmm

if thats your view on life, i feel bad for you.

personally, i think everything i do is something. people with your outlook on life make me sad... why have a negative view?

just make the best of what you got, no need to change the world, just change YOUR world..

and you may think YOU are trapped and worthless, but personally, i feel quite contrastingly..

and we think about it because it provokes just that, thought.
its interesting whether it will happen or not.
and, frankly, its something to worry about if it were true, even if we cant stop it

You feel bad for me because I feel the need to cause change?  I'm happy, which means that I will not change MY world, but concerned about the way things are now and especially with others.  My views may seem negative to some.  They are images of what I have seen and experienced; most people have never done anything significant; most people have never really lived their lives.  That is what I see but it isn't what I think at any moment.  I'm thinking about how to change that.

Why mar whatever existence you have with thoughts about a terrifying end?

no need to wallow in it, simply study it, think about it, and wonder...

i see that we have vastly different views of LIVING... however i think yours is quite subjective, even if you think it isn't whats profound for you may not be for everyone else. and to do things that are profound for everyone else is an unrealistic ideal...

The point I was making was completely facetious, and you're an idiot if you think a primitive bronze age culture can some how predict the end of the world with any accuracy. Which is just the end of a calendar cycle, btw OH NOES!!!

Seriously, the apolgetics of these people are akin to Christian's trying to prove Noah's flood, heres a good one:

So the Mayan calendar is not just a calendar, it is a warning. Somehow they knew what had happened before and they built their calandar system around this end time to tip future Mankind off. In fact, they believed there have been 4 extinction cycles in the history of the planet already with the 5th one just around the corner.

Well, according to people who actually did some research and independent study, there have already been five major mass extinction events in earth's past. I would be happy to debunk the whole thing at some point, but I just don't really have the time. See, I'm learning about real science in University, and you can't just throw that up on a single web page.

really, YOU could debunk a theory involving exctinctions periods on earth before written records and such?

also, they DID calculate this EXACT event TO THE DAY of which it will happen... how do you explain that, sheer luck..

Dec. 21 2012 is the EXACT day at which Votan predicted the sun would be at the center of the galaxy [milky way]. they also predicted this day to be the day that the earth finished its wobble about its axis... explain to me how this is nothing more than guesses?

im not saying its true, im just saying, it deserves some merit of appreciation

Well he could have just thought of a date and thrown it up there to sound smart since in those days the religious leaders pretty much had all the power that kings didn't have.

Even though he may be right about the location of the earth etc etc, I seriously doubt we have to worry about becoming extinct anytime soon. Seriously with all the asteroids, etc that pass us by on a regular basis it's a wonder we're still here. But we are. I'll believe end time when it comes from a reputed scientific leader.

you mean, from a scientific leader of OUR time? [mind you im only trying to provoke thought here]

Votan was THE scientific leader of his time. he had WONDEROUS knowledge of the stars and the solar system.. which is how he calculated the "end time"... True, im not saying that it will happen, i was merely pointing out something that is rather peculiar...

not to mention the fact that his predictions [much like nostradamus] have all been correct, in both meaning and time... then rule in the fact that for THAT many years ago, him to have predicted the EXACT day..without telescopes, before the rest of the world knew the earth was even round...

i just think its astonishing really..especially since the calender was created around the prophecies, and the culture, around the calender... therefore they must have put great weight upon the prophecies viability..

No, the calendar was built on astronomical phenomenon. For whatever reason, somehow they figured out how all this astronomical stuff is timed (but if they really knew what was going on is debatable) and then made predictions. The article talking about "aligning over the galactic mass" or whatever is complete bullshit, but it's not necessarly weird that they could predict when a transit of venus would occur.

norock, it is believed that they had their knowledge from et's who apparently aided in human evolution.  A stretch isn't it?  The more you look into things, the more it sounds more reasonable.  There really is no other logical explanation.

Try to look into it for yourself.

that actually IS believed about the Egyptians...[though its plausibility is questionable]

it is evident in their drawings and sculptures... the gods all had very elongated heads and skinny bodies. [thats a topic for a different day lol]

and AJM. i don't understand what you don't believe about it... I'm sure if you do some research on the prophecies of Votan that you would find his predictions...

their entire culture is based off the exact phenomenon that will happen on Dec. 21 2012..

they have, in their mythology, a man named First Father. they tell us that he traveled through this rift to play the evil spirits that inhabited it to a ball game. however, once there, they tricked him, and beheaded him... the city was in ruins, but the people, given new life from his death entered the dark rift to avenge him..
i don't feel like explaining the game again..

as for the calender. Votan used the stars and planets to predict future events. they believe that everything is a cycle. that everything that happens will happen again, and again, for all eternity, at the same times. so he used the knowledge of the stars to create a calender that would tie their lives, with the cycle of the universe. but also the human cycle as well. giving each year 260 days, the same time as human gestation. thus combining the stars and the earth..

i don't see how you can write off such an amazing prediction as fallacy...

I don't believe that the world is going to end on 12/21/12. It is obvious that the Maya were clever and able to make a calendar based off various astronomical phenomenon, and understood that these things were mostly cyclical, and thus could be predicted , all other factors and what not are purely incidental.

And no serious archaeologist believes aliens assisted the ancient Egyptians.

The world is NOT going to end that is not what the Mayans predicted, they predicted a new 'era' a new 'beginning' meaning drastic changes in our world, have you heard of 'The Age of Aquarius' thats coming soon and that means a new 'era' just like the Mayans predicted. I have heard that the calendar ends there because that's when we'll no longer need a calender because time travel will be invented. Basically what it means is a drastic change will occur.
