Spam attacks are not fun for moderators.  You catch the spam topics, have to ban all of the accounts and remove all of the posts only to have members tell you that you need to get rid of the spam faster.

I'm not talking about lighthearted replies to spammy topics.  I'm talking about posts that members KNOW are going to be deleted, such as spamfuck's "omgsgsahjgha111fa" and members who post replies for the sole purpose of getting points such as "aaaaaaaaa" or "o rly?"

PS. This is not to stop spam, it is to discourage dishonest members from benefiting from spam.

So if someone posts crap like "Shud I jerk off to her", with a link to some huge-tit whore, then someone quotes it and says 'whatever floats your boat', and I say 'Those could float a destroyer, actually', or a something of the sort, it would not fall under this?

Please note my definition of spam-attack.  If we are 5 minutes into one person creating multiple accounts to keep posting said  huge-tit whore, and the same members keep on replying, then possibly.  Otherwise, no.

What the fuck? Why are we being punished for spammers?
were being punished for replying to spammers.  If you don't reply to them, it'll stop them from posting pretty much because they only want attention, and well, if we don't reply they'll stop spamming.

How do we know if they're really spamming or they're just being complete and utter idiots with a topic? It's hard to tell idiots from spammers =\

Well, I'm sure he won't punish you if you go into a topic thats stupid, but not spam and say something about it. But if you just write some sort of spam to go along with it, yu should loose points.  I think he's mainly trying to stop the spam outbreaks., that are topics that just say "spam' or "aotheaoejlae" in it.  If you reply to them, you obviously know its spam.  He wouldn't do it for a stupid, but not spam topic.  Take it up with him though to be sure.

But you see, to me, that topic "Literacy is overrated" is spam, but technically it isn't. The OP is just a complete dumbass who needs to be banned for being one.

right.  so maybe he should let us reply to the stupid topics, but the ones that anyone with a iq higher than 10, should know is spam.

Well at least this doesn't happen everyday so it's kind of unneccessary altogether, but I guess it's not a bad idea. Losing 25 points, getting warned and even banned is what made me skeptical, but if that's the rules, whoever wants to stay on LW will follow them.

So in theory, if I were to report a post that was spam, and post in it to say that people need to stop posting in it, I would get 25 penalty points and a warning, because I posted to tell other people to stop.

Somehow this new policy feels more born of blind frustration than careful planning...

I think it was about time this site got that. I don't usually encourage it, but I do sometimes legitimately post saying something relevant in the topic even if the original poster is clearly a spammer. I hope I don't get into trouble for doing that kinda good.

You could sit there and take it out on members that are spamming because they can, OR, you can toughen up on the Registration process. Include a God damn Email verification, for Christ's sake.

Currently, its just nothing at all..................... How do you expect banned members to NOT create accounts and spam?!? You'd almost be stupid not to.

And yes, I do agree that it IS Goddamn annoying when n00bs sit there and tell the spammer to "Go away", or "umm..... k".

Believe me, it only encourages the act of spamming. If people just leave it alone, spammers no longer have anything to feed off of.

Its only common sense. Speaking from personal experience ofcourse.
