I hardly think deducting points is going to halt spammers. They don't do it for points. They do it to be fucking annoying. If it really is so much work for the mods to delete it all, surely the obvious answer is to hire more mods?
It's not really supposed to stop spammers per say. It's to discourage us from replying in their topics, so it is easier for the mods to deal with.

I approve of this. All that "please stop posting" shit was retarded anyway. I've personally had several members tell me that they love spamfests because they can either spam in the soon-to-be-deleted topics and get a lot of points without being punished, or they can act all righteous and say "stop posting dude it only encourages him!" in every topic two or six times, and seem like they are doing a noble and great thing whilst only really acquiring e-points.

It's ridiculous how many people are seriously missing the point of this topic. YOU'RE NOT GETTING 25 POINTS DEDUCTED IF YOU ADD A REPLY TO A SPAM TOPIC. If, however, you follow a troll around posting nonsense, you'll be penalized.
This is exactly the case. This is all a result of me noticing the same few members replying to spamfuck's topics in a way that made it clear that they were just getting points off of topics that they knew would be deleted soon so their conduct would go un-checked. To clarify a few other things that were asked in this topic-- 1) The points do not go anywhere. They are simply subtracted from your total (you can find them under Penalties in My Account). 2) It is a spam attack if one person (or a group of people working in unison, such as the GNAA), using multiple accounts, to create multiple spam threads. I mean literal spam. Not like stupid, pointless topics. Actual SPAM, topics such as "SPAMSPAMSPAMSPAM" or "afhadguadsfasfuashf" 3) This may stop or discourage spammers in some instances, seeing that there are breeds of spammers that thrive off of attention. That was not my intention in this particular case, however. Spammers like spamfuck obviously are just out to cause disruption. They know their posts aren't going to be up long enough to get attention. This penalty system was to prevent members from capitalizing off of the attack and gaining points in a dishonest manner while other members ignore or report the spam and do not benefit. 4) Someone mentioned that we should lock or delete these topics instead of penalizing those who reply to them. We do delete these topics, but in times of a spam-attack, the community should work together to bring the forums back to a state of homeostasis. This means moderators removing all content and banning accounts, members staying out of the way, not creating more clog by creating topics complaining about the spam or replying to the spammers, and reporting instances of the spam that we may have missed (it is not usually necessary to report the instances that we can find in the Fresh Topics) 5) For those of you who claim to do it to ask others to stop posting, or to argue with the troll, rather than for points, just don't do it. A troll is here to do nothing other than disrupt the forums. The topics will be gone soon, you don't need to tell people to stop posting (especially since that's what I'm doing here), and you don't have to argue with the troll who probably won't even get to read your reply due to the topic being deleted.
