It is. It is the grades you receive in all your classes on a scale of 1 to 4 (1 being a F and 4 being an A) added up and divided by the total number of classes.

yeap ^^
however you can get above a 4.0 (the accepted TOP grade) when your average is above ~95-96.
for example. my friend recieves constant 85s. his GPA is in the 3.5 range. and i recieve consistent 98-100's so mine is ~4.3 but there are several students in my school who have GPA's of ~5.0 with all of their AP courses.

To make it simple, it's all the grades you get in all of your classes combined and divided. It is based on a scale of numbers, 4 being an A, and 1 being a D, you get no credit for an F, unlike what nycboy9114 had mentioned.

Not all schools grade where you can get more than a 4.0. At my high school it didn't matter if you took all AP classes or all intro classes--the highest you can get is a 4.0.

I recently received my final grades for the previous semester. The usual controversy is as usual. I managed to pass all of my classes with the minimal “D” requirements, and scored perfection on all of my finals. Honestly, I do so in spite of the education system. They set up a grading scale with the intention of differentiating those of higher and lower intelligence while denying so many other factors. It also kind of pisses other parents off. We have a series of test at the end of the year in given fields, and medals/ money is awarded to those who have ranked within the top percentile. Naturally the hype is directed towards the Valid Victorian contenders and I almost feel bad for having to deny them what they feel they deserve. I remember last year I dressed in really rugged, and I got all of these bad looks.. lol.. Some parents even complained that the tallies be recounted, and thought I had some how rigged the whole ordeal.
Moral- people have habit to correlate performance to actual ability.. Underestimation may lead to embarrassment..
But, it does seem as though I am rambling. Goodbye for now..

maybe we would all get it a little easier if we posted our averages out of 100. There are some differences in how people convert to GPA.
My cumulative average last year was 99.

At my school, the highest GPA is 4.0. Here is an example of how it would work, based on my grades.
Class 1 - 95 A Class 2 - 90 A Class 3 - 88 A Class 4 - 100 A Class 5 - 98 A Class 6 - 116 A Class 7 - 91 A
(If your wondering about the 116 grade, it's in band. I have placed in several regional bands, and earned a lot of bonus points)
4+4+4+4+4+4+4 = 28. Total of 7 classes, so:
28/7 = 4. My GPA is 4.0
