is it possible to set a certain resolution on one screen and have another resolution on the other?

Yes.  I usually hook up a 19" monitor at 1600x1200 to my laptop (which is 1024x768), and they co-exist fine.

Yeah, but don't expect them to work together like a double wide screen. They would have to work individually like two different monitors.

Yes you can.

I do that with two screens sometimes, when I need extra space.

Nividia is great for dual screen.
