Okay, here's the deal. I started out going to college in my home town. I was there for 2 1/2 years, but didn't like it at all. This semester (starting in January), I transferred to a new school away from home. I absolutely love it here. However, I am finding that I will probably have to change my major. I am an elementary education and special education combined major. I love children and have a passion for teaching. However, I have a lot of medical problems too. I have been told by numerous teachers and advisors that I should not have this major, because working with kids is more than I will be able to handle. I was not willing to accept this, because this is what I want to do with my life. That is a lot of why I transferred. I refused to believe that I had to give up on my dreams. A week ago, someone at my new school told me that I should consider changing my major. I was really hurt and upset by this, because that is the last thing I want to do. However, maybe they are right. Maybe I can't do this and I need to change my major. I can't think of anything I would like to do. I have taken some quizzes online, but all my results point to teaching. I am wondering if anyone knows of any thorough programs or surveys online that will help me to find a new major. I have to stay at this school until next January because of my lease for my apartment, but am considering moving to another school next spring. Thanks!

I don't want to do anything else except teach. I want to teach children with special needs... that's the problem. My whole life I have wanted to be a teacher. I never had a back up plan or a 2nd choice. There is nothing else that I can even imagine myself doing and being happy. I was not happy at my old school, mostly because they were not working with me and my disability. It was such a fight to go to school. I am very happy here at my new school. I am thinking that I could maybe find a new major here at this school, so I don't have to leave a school I am happy with. But I cannot think of any other major I would be okay with.

You know what, you should go for it. After all why should any of us let any problems we have stop us! If you want to do somthing, even against others advice it will be so much more worth it when you get there! If your only ever going to be happy in teaching then fight your way through the course. At the end of the day you will be a better person and when you do get your teaching job you will be able to share the time and journey you had, which should be inspiring to your pupils. I was lucky enough to be able to choose another root as my heart was split anyways. If your set on teaching then go for it no matter what. If you do fail then don't worry, you can always try for teacher support or even a job working with intervidual kids with special needs. I know that in my old school they had a team of 30+ people who gave 1 on 1 help to such kids, and you could do that :)
