Why? Yeah, you could argue that 'we' should be spending time bettering the human race, but surely there are enough of us to allow for some to show some expression in something they have a passion for? I watched a film once called 'Equilibrium'. In the film, personal belongings were banned, as i recall, so were emotions and forms of self expression. As shown in the film, and as logic should dictate, people aren't going to want to live their lives in a sedate, often futile fashion. 'Rebels' will occur, and wars, etc. Back where we started, just with a new face.

it's just a matter of your perspective. you say progress is bigger tv's and faster computers. i say that is the opposite of progress. art is producing something that relates to people's emotions, it's not about making the world a better place.
