After I opened a Real Player file the sound does not work on my computer. I'm not sure if that file had to do with anything, but I do know it worked fine before I opened it. Is there anything I can do?

Find new sound drivers for your computer. Install the old ones if they are still there. And then install the new ones.

my only suggestion is to restart your computer, and if it still doesn't work reboot

That can't be the only way to get it working again. I would rather not start installing new things and stuff. Any other way?

Go through the Hardware Manager and check to see what problems it is having if they show up. Then search for issue details and maybe post them here.
If it is a dedicated card pull it out and back in to make sure there is a decent connection.
And always make sure the problem isn't that a cable on the inside of PC is undone or that speaker cable is in or not torn.

I have a stupid question. Where is the hardware manager? I have a Windows XP if that helps.

I hope it is close to Win2k, I think it is near identical for this:
Right Click My Computer-->Properties-->Hardware-->Device Manager
