Anyway, assuming that it's relatively warm underneath Mars's surface, and assuming that the water really comes from springs underground, there could be life developed underneath, almost certainly nothing advanced, but atmosphere or no, it could be.

Is it not possible for life to emerge under conditions different than it did on earth?  Is it certain that our evolutionary path is the only road to life and consciousness that exists?
