cool Stephen Hawking said humans have to establish space colonies within the next 50 years or we'll die here on Earth thanks to religion.

 Uh, no, not quite.

He said that he's worried about global disasters, nuclear war, and genetically engineered viruses, not religion.

 Stephen Hawking isn't dumb.

I dont know where you get thatfrom but he in fact said it was all religion's fault. I agree he's not dumb

No one cares about Stephen Hawking the physicist who failed to develop a theory of everything and rather vaguely declared it impossible as he gave up, so keep him out of my thread.

Don't get excited like retards. Life on mars won't ,in any way, mean green aliens. We can only hope for microbial life on the Red Planet.

"He added that if humans can avoid killing themselves in the next 100 years, they should have space settlements that can continue without support from Earth.

"It is important for the human race to spread out into space for the survival of the species," Hawking said. "Life on Earth is at the ever-increasing risk of being wiped out by a disaster, such as sudden global warming, nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus or other dangers we have not yet thought of."

If you've ever studied resource issues, human factors, etc., you'd know that anyone who believes that religion is the cause of man's problems is a flaming idiot.

Anyway, assuming that it's relatively warm underneath Mars's surface, and assuming that the water really comes from springs underground, there could be life developed underneath, almost certainly nothing advanced, but atmosphere or no, it could be.

Is it not possible for life to emerge under conditions different than it did on earth?  Is it certain that our evolutionary path is the only road to life and consciousness that exists?

Honestly asking.

I doubt that it's reasonably believed that extra terrestrials once colonized mars. Basic native life forms, maybe, not space intruders though.

Same here however lots of people seem to think they have plenty of evidence towards that conclusion, neat stuff either way.
