frenchnerd7, are you saying there must be two separate bodies of matter existing for there to be gravity? This is a bit like saying a radio wave can not exist if there is no receiver to hear it.

not really, just that the gravity might not be able to be projected across space without matter, like sound is not able to be passed through space

its an analogy...other energy types go across space without matter. Forces other than gravity seem to exist in space also without matter.

because the behaviour of gravity seems to be dependent upon matter and vice versa

S'far's'I'know, gravity is a characteristic 'property' of anything with a mass. So if you destroyed the Earth, it wouldn't produce any more gravitational pull. Black holes, on the other hand, are considered to be incredible dense (read: massive) objects, thus having a large gravitational pull.

Gravity is a force, without the Earth's matter, there would be no force, therefore no gravity.

i see it this way. gravity may exist around matter and may have a major part in the formation of black holes- the process of a dieing star sucking in energy from other sources in an attempt to stay alive- but if there was no matter how are we going to know if it can exist on its own? because we are made of matter ourselves. or could gravity be like elements in that theres no way of completely distroying them but they can change in formation and what they join to to lose or gain properties?
