That isn't true for all biofuels, just the vast majority.

I   abs.

The natural byproduct of brewing is ethanol, it doesn't really require any energy to produce, as it is simply waste from the various beer companies.  Now corn ethanol, what is being pushed on us by the government and media, is nowhere near cost effiecent.

But unless we increase our beer consumption similar to France's wine consumption, that isn't the solution. Corn ethanol though it the primary producer of most of the biofuel used today.

If we could simply enact a 5% efficency increase, we could buy ourselves decades.

But in the states we have a large wine production industry, as well as our great beer industry.  I haven't looked into the other companies to know if they have taken up the lead of Coor's to sell their ethanol to energy companies.

The corn ethanol concept is what is really inefficent, dropping that would save us a lot.  I think we could even go as far as replacing those subsidies with tax breaks for those who replace their corn fields with grasslands and wind farms, though once they get their wind farms up and a little ranching goin they won't need the tax breaks anymore.

Abs, ethanol IS alcohol. The whole point of brewing is to make the stuff, otherwise all they're making is foul tasting fizzy drinks.

Ethanol could be made, but to make it on a large scale requires the use of oil. Clearly, that's no help. The only other way is to brew it in the traditional way, which is very slow and inefficient.

But we are already producing it with our alcohol consumption.  It is going to be produced irregardless of our intent to produce it, as our desire for beer and other alcohol will remain strong.

I still don't follow. Ethanol isn't waste - it's the product. All the ethanol we make is put into drink.

Go to http://www.google.com and type in Coors and ethanol and look at the various things that come up.

so what are other possibilities for biofuel besides ethanol? are renewable resources of veggies like soybeans, etc 100% beneficial for the environment and renewable - do we have enough farmland to plant all this stuff?

Well the one thing about corn that I have liked is the one type of corn that you can burn.  Burning corn to heat your home and cook your food seems to be a cheap and clean way to go about things.

If all new major buildings are built with heat pumps to heat themselves, nuclear energy is phased out and clean renewable sources of energy are heavily invested in then we'll be getting somewhere.
