I am drawn to their bueaty as well.  I have only seen photos of the new generation ones that are being built all over, and I haven't been to Holland sine the mid 1980s so I have few memories of their windmills.  I'd like to find the location of some of the wind farms in Texas to drive out to and take photos of.

One of my goals in my life is to own a small lot of land, not sure if you'd call it a ranch or not, consisting of a few dozen acres.  I'd be glad to clear a small patch in the brush and grass for a couple of these windmills.  I'm sure just two or three would be plenty enough to keep my estate self-suffiecent.

The problem with wind farms that some are beginning to see is that they basically become areas of slaughter for birds. Not so attractive anymore. Wind farms on a grand scale would probably cause some serious ecological disorder because of this.

Stupid birds will eventually learn how to fly around them, much like they eventually figured out how to live around power lines without electrocuting theirselves the vast majority of the time.

Beautiful, no?

I think so.

Much more beautiful than a coal power station.

I'm not so big on their looks myself, but I'll likely end up living in the south anyway, which isn't really wind-land.

I lived close to about a dozen or so huge turbines in Holland for about 3 weeks, and they looked stunning. They lined the side of a valley, each painted a different shade of pink to purple, but done tastefully. I wish I could find a picture.

I can't remember if it was Kerry or Kennedy that went off a while back about the attempt to put a wind farm off the Atlantic coast because it would block their view from their ocean front property.

Personally, I think they should pay the money to keep energy prices down out of their own pockets if they so despiratly want to eliminate these other means to keep the prices down.

quote from abspwnyou:

"I'm sure that with understanding of the high winds that the windmills could be designed to withstand such high winds, even encourage the high winds to accelrate energy production."

If you are refering to straight-line winds I agree. But you mentioned tornado alley earlier and I fear it's going to be a very long time before we have the technology to build anything that will withstand the fury of a tornado, let alone continue to operate. If you've ever seen the aftermath of a tornato, you know that there is usually nothing left standing in its path.

If that's not what you were refering to, please accept my apology. And here is an interesting site by way of amends:

(I hope I got that right)

Biofuels, for the most part are btu deficent, meaning it requires more energy to produce then you get from burning them. Serious problem.

Hydrogen is currently a giant load of bullshit. Hydrogen in the current political sense requires platinumn as a catalyst. Anyone want to look up on the commodities exchange what Platinium is going for? Good luck with that. We are decades away from hydrogen as a viable fuel source.

As for oil, the anwr is crap. 10 years we'll see that first drop of oil and by then the amount produced won't make a dent, and it will be priced at international levels. Big fricken deal. That is hardly a solution, more of a industry kickback.

the best solution now is obvious

Efficiency is everything. The average car is 30% efficent. Meaning 70% of the potential energy is not used to move the car and is wasted. That essentially means 70% of the gas you pay for does not add any value to your car or transport you. Most industrial and household products roughly run the same. Increasing a mere 5% on all products could cut down on energy demand in absolute astronomical terms.

That isn't true for all biofuels, just the vast majority.

The natural byproduct of brewing is ethanol, it doesn't really require any energy to produce, as it is simply waste from the various beer companies.  Now corn ethanol, what is being pushed on us by the government and media, is nowhere near cost effiecent.

So far the best supplier of ethanol out there is Coor's.  They are already in the Rocky Mountians producing beer, and it would cost them money to throw away the ethanol byproduct.  So now they sell it for cheap and pull a nearly 100% profit on it.

On a slightly different note, heat engines are 300% efficient. Although bulky, they can heat a building of any size very well. It would be impracticable to install them in existing buildings, but all new buildings should have them. That would dramatically reduce carbon emissions.

Just makes you wonder what they are going to do next to prove its greatness.  I'm a proud supporter of ethanol production, and help finance the production of it on a regular basis.
