So hopefully anyone from the UK, or France, or familiar with the rail/postal systems of either of these countries could point me in a helpful direction. I'm planning a trip in August with my mother, to Scotland first (that portion was planned for us and is settled) and then to Paris. It seems that there are basically two good options for getting from Scotland to France, and that those are small intra-European flights, and trains. If one were to try and take a train from Edinburgh or Glasgow to Paris, at some point one would need to get on the Eurostar. Any details about this process would be appreciated.

Another pressing issue is that the trip to Scotland involves me traveling with my bagpipes, my uniform which includes a big old kilt and raincape, and none of which is conducive to light flexible travel on a European vacation. I'm looking at some means of disposing of this luggage to make the trip to France more manageable. I know nothing about the baggage restrictions on either trains or intra-European flights, and if it were not feasible to get from Scotland to Paris with all my luggage I would want to mail it back to the states. Whether or not this could be done, and how would also be very helpful.

You should be fine with getting your luggage to Paris, the EU's pretty lax on what you can take between countries. As for how to get there - forget about the Eurostar unless you absolutely loathe flying. Getting public transport just to get to the Eurostar is gonna cost you several times more than flights direct to Paris.

Got a favorite local airline? A related issue would be whether I'd be obligated to check my pipes or whether I could take them as a carry-on.

Personally I opt for KLM when flying to the continent, they're about twice the going rate but I feel a lot more comfortable in a plane where the furnishings don't creak. If you want to go budget, choose Easyjet over Ryanair. Your pipes should be fine as hand luggage so long as when packed they fit the required dimensions for hand luggage.
