Interactive state-by-state map of gun ownership

The map of the United States is a state-by-state comparison of gun ownership and gun deaths.

Most of the states with the highest rates of gun deaths (shockingly!) have the highest gun ownership rates.

Hawaii has the lowest gun ownership rate and second lowest gun homicide rate.

(Massachusetts has the lowest gun homicide rate and third lowest gun ownership rate)

Virtually every state (New Jersey included) with the lowest gun ownership rate has the lowest firearm death rates (Washington DC, which is not a state, bucks the trend).

Is this really a surprising revelation?

I don't think the map distinguishes justifiable from criminal deaths; but even if it doesn't, is there reason to believe many of the net total gun deaths are legal as opposed to illegal?

the thing i love about guns, other than hunting, is that if everybody in the entire world had guns. the people who use guns for evil would be shot and killed by the righteous man. if nobody was allowed to have guns. only criminals and police who would arrive after the damage has been done would have guns.

i for one think nobody should have gun rights or permits for concealed carry, i think everybody should have guns and conceal them at all times. there should not have to be rights and permits to protect yourself.

I agree entirely with the first part of this. And I think mostly with the second part.

If there was a high homicide rate where I lived the last thing I would want is more gun control, I'd want to get a gun myself. I don't see how you one make the affirmative allegation that A causes B when B could also be said to cause A.
In other words, a high homicide rate could cause people to buy more guns for protection. One can't just look at a simple correlation and make baseless conclusions without empirical evidence.

Where does it say anything about homicides? All I see is gun deaths. States with more cars surely have more car deaths.

Tbh my biggest fear isn't the little sliver of crime that individuals commit against each other anyway. It's the 3.5 million people per year that governments murder.

Gun deaths or homicides, it doesn't matter. If a bunch of people are getting shot I'm going to want a gun myself for protection.

In fairness, that isnt entirely relevant since the OP was talking about gun related deaths and not specifically homicides.

Not at all, gang members in Chicago by-pass the city's restrictive firearm legislation by getting guns from the suburbs.

That's actually pretty well known. But I guess ignorance goes a long way to believing there isn't a strong correlation between gun ownership and firearm death rates.

Would you like to speak to "legal" ownership? All the restrictions in the world will not prevent illegal ownership.

LoL.  Montana (!) has a firearm death rate close to Chicago's homicide rate.

All that urban crowding and ghetto poverty in rural Montana, huh?

Yeah, right.  Gangs are getting their guns through legal gun purchases in the suburbs.  All the restrictions in the world?  Bullshit.  If handguns were completely illegal in the suburbs and Indiana, Chicago street gangs would have virtually no one to buy from.

Do you realize how many total deaths it takes in Montana to reach that per capita rate? LOL!

You are so naive it's ridiculous.
