On my aunt...

I'm so sick, I haven't gotten out of bed today, and my husband ran to walmart to get a few things we need.  My aunt had left her futon mattress at our house for 2 weeks, since my mom borrowed mine for a cross country trip(my cousin uses it in his room and he was here while they were gone).

I'm in bed which is in the back corner of the house, and I hear my alarm chime because a door opened in the house.  I hear the door shut and open again.  No one said anything, which is very abnormal.  Typically when someone enters my house, they know to make their presense known.  So I get up, grab my .45 and start walking to the front of the house.  I get half way through the kitchen(inbetween my room and the front rooms/front door-has a pocket door so I cannot see the front door) and I hear the door open again.  This time my aunt decides to say something.  She probably would have had a heart attack....

I quick dropped the gun on the kitchen counter before she opened to kitchen door...lol.  Got my heart rate up a little....

Oh well...

Cops are wonderful assessment tools at a HazMat incident.
Send them in with a lit road flare.

If they don't pass out or blow up, it's safe.

I am FAR from paranoid.  Someone coming into my house unannounced, while I am home alone, is reason enough to suspect there is something up.  People don't just walk into my house unannounced, they know better.

Lock your doors all the time. That way when a friend with a key walks in, you know it's probably fine. And when someone kicks your door in while you're home, you shoot their legs off. Make sure to use good locks like Medeco, Abloy or Schlage Primus. Schlage SecureKey and Kwikset's SmartKey are also good, or at least hard to pick.

I don't lock my doors all the time.  A lot of times I even forget to lock them at night.  No one has a key to our house except us... There are only three in existence and we have them all.  During the easy In generally not worried, at night we have an alarm system if someone tries to get in.

You think owning a gun and planning on shooting an impostor is more reasonable than just locking your door? My door is locked at all times because I live in an area full of scum and dirty thieves. Last time my door was unlocked someone came in and stole my purse and phone. I still see no reason to purchase a gun though.

I don't live in a bad area.  I live in a great area.  Why do you assume that I own a gun for the reason of self defense?

Not only that, if someone wants to get into a home, a locked door isn't going to stop them.  They are going to get in either way.

I hunt, shoot for sport and plan on competitive shooting some time soon.

I also love guns and have an antique rifle that we do not use.

Our hand gun does not belong to us.  We are holding it for a friend who is currently in Afghanistan.  He didn't trust the gun with anyone else.
