they'd been given cocaine nasally (to constrict the blood vessels in the nose as that's where they were operating) and since the surgery is relatively short and the cocaine long(er) lasting, once they awoke from the anaesthesia they were still feeling the effects of the cocaine.

they were so loopy it was funny. the nurse said that patients receiving cocaine often say really crazy things from being high hahaha, then apologise later not knowing why they said it.

they also use heroin in hospitals, which i know they don't use in america. i think topical cocaine is used in america though, but clearly it's not just given out to people who have the sniffles or something.

it's not being 'handed out'. the patient was asleep when it was applied to the nose by the doctor. much like how heroin is used sometimes for pain relief in hospitals.

the fact that they are illegal drugs doesn't mean they don't have legitimate medical uses (which is how they started out to begin with).

clearly you're not gonna be able to waltz into a&e and score some coke or heroin though.

I'm not sure it's used in the U.S. anymore. My grandfather used to carry legal cocaine in his pharmacy, but it's been a long time since he could sell it.

surprisingly it happens to be the most well suited for this purpose. it nicely constricts the vessels in the area (so you bleed less during nasal surgery) and it also acts as a local anaesthetic keeping the area numb/pain free post-surgery.

from my quick check on medscape it is. a pharmacy is not necessarily going to stock it though, because it's probably not given out on prescription. but that doesn't mean it can't be used by hospitals during procedures.

Makes sense to me.

well my quick search online says they still use topical cocaine in some situations. maybe not in your hospital but it definitely is still used.

heroin not though, which beats me cause it works pretty well.

I imagine it must be quite amusing occasionally for hospital staff to hear some of the stuff patients say while high. One of my friends from uni was in a fairly awful accident (during freshers, in a graveyard... good times) and after surgery was was blethering on about a talking owl at the end of his bed, haha.
