This article is awesome.

There's really not too much to add except that yes, I think it's pretty much correct.  Yes, the article's style is beyond whimsical, but fundamentally it says quite a bit.

What do you think?

Haha, that's really a nice analogy.

It's true, of course, and not exactly a groundbreaking idea. We're all familiar with the fact that if Mommy Dearest died, it'd be a bigger deal than if a couple thousand people died of some epidemic in Western Samoa or whatever. There's a degree of seperation that turns entire lives into background noise, there's just no way a mind can process every single person as significant, not truly.

I'm not sure what exactly to contribute, but I found the article very entertaining and insightful. It's not exactly a new idea, but it is a new and useful presentation. I've already linked it to several friends, and I've found myself quoting on more than a few occassions.

But... how do we overcome the monkeysphere? He's right, the problem is that in order to function, society must force us to integrate and cooperate with groups larger than we can really comprehend. The base solution, I suppose, is to remind ourselves that every monkey, even those outside of our spheres, as just as much monkeys as all the others, and just as deserving of our fairness.

The Monkeysphere is an excellent article, yes, and actually raises good points, which is strange considering it was made by the same guy who created this bizarre mixing of Iraq and Starcraft.

And now I'm expected to mourn dead Americans?
