Requirement of Verbosity
What is the basis for it?

Why is it that on this forum we are expected to produce posts of a required length? This requirement makes no sense on many levels, including, almost ironically, the fact that more abundant and complicated words do not make a statement more clear or comprehensible.
In particular, the notion that those of greater intellectual aptitude must use longer, more complicated words and phrases to make a point is totally unfounded.
I won't go on and on about my argument, but mostly I'd just like to see what others have to say about it. Personally, I think that the rule about certain post lengths should be (abolished), because all it does is cause those with something short and concise to say to instead bulk out their posts with more language and therefore less clarity.
The thing about this whole situation which I find most amusing is that I just read an essay by George Orwell about the decline of good English language usage which adressed the issue of current (obviously the essay is outdated, but the point still stands) negative trends in language - in particular the idea that using more and longer words will make a better impression, when really the opposite is true. The essay was extremely intersting, and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested.

Anyways, the point of this obnoxiously long and probably vaguely hypocritical post was to say that I feel we should not be required to make posts of a certain length simply because the forum is titled "Intellectual". (I got a little bit sidetracked, sorry about that)
And of course it is also possible that I am out of date and this argument has already been made...but rest assured I did check the search bar and it couldn't find anything similar.

you say that but i bet that every other word in that post was written using thesaurus.com.
hahaha.
next time, try not be hypocritical and don't try so hard to make people realize you're smart.

I can see your point, but I still think you're full of shit.

Yeah, I know, but that was exactly the point. You can see how obnoxious it gets when someone uses more words jsut for the sake of it. If you really want I will change it, but I think it makes more of an impression as it is...and I dont use thesauraus.com, just for the record.

While it is unfortunate that I cannot call you a fool and be done with it due to the verbosity requirement, I find that requirement an amusing part of the quasi-serious place of discussion, quasi-joke that is this forum.

I agree with you in principle. As I've mentioned elsewhere on this forum, sesquipedalianism is dumb. That said, George Orwell was a tin-eared hack who couldn't write his way out of a wet paper bag.

However, I doubt that the word limit is going to disappear anytime soon. Though the logical foundation upon which the word limit was built is fallacious, it is completely irrelevant to the fact that David only enforces it to piss us off.

Well...

One: What is the required word limit?

Two: I would much rather hear someones arguement/explanation then a yes or no response so I think a word limit is important to have.

I have not read much of Orwell's work so could you please explain to me why this opinion is true?

Oh, my opinion is not based solely on what he said, that was a totally vaguely-related mostly off-topic side note.
And I disagree. Orwell writes some really interesting stuff, but each to his own I guess.

What Orwell wrote about is fascinating. His actual writing is drab and shitty. He had a tin ear for language.

Drab and shitty to you probably becuase of his ideas about being clear and concise. He had this hatred for some reason for people who used drawn out language just for the sake of it. I just figured I'd defend him a little.

Yeah, that's what I said.

No, you dumbass. One can still be concise and yet respect and maintain the peculiar rhythms and cadences of the English language. Orwell doesn't. He is a boring writer as a result.
