I don't really care for the required length thing either. If I want to say more, I would, but in this case I kind am forced to say more than I would like. If I want to ramble, I will. However, we should all remember the quote, "Brevity is the soul of wit." (My English Teacher is always telling us that when we write essays and responses to things.)

So what is almost as silly as the silly rules we have for this forum?

The fact that about 50% of the topics created here are people whining about the rules.

Apparently as long as it's more than one line, its fine. Or you could cheat and quote somebody then add a one-liner to it. But I guess it was meant to stop one-liner posts like... I think we all should know what I mean.

I agree in full with the majority of what has been said. Most of the time, a longer than average post isn't necessary.

However, I think one of its merits is that it filters out stupid, short responses.

Thats...so wise? Except try to give a little more proof next time. See, just making statements doesn't say much for your point. And this still isn't long enough apparently.

The point of the word limit is to show how everything that falls underneath is utterly worthless and should have never been uttered.

Furthermore, if you actually have a grasp of the English language, then increasing the length of your post can only possibly serve to clarify, not obfuscate.

I disagree. Alot can still be said in a short post, and often trying to add words just causes either redundancy or a pointless continuation of talking just to meet the word limit. It just doesnt make sense to me that we're saying here that waht you have to say is only worth saying if it's over a certain amount of words.

Your high school English teachers never taught you the principle of 'quality over quantity,' did they?

If anything, the length requirement is a bit of humor on David's behalf.  It's annoying as fuck, but considering that...some...LW members, lack the ability to write a short and witty reply, I tolerate it.

Ah, yes. You can tell when a new intellectual passes the test, because invariably the first thing they always do is start a thread complaining about the verbosity requirement.

Not that I can't sympathize. I might've just been lucky -- there was already one going, when I first got in here.

Sorrry, but i passed the test when it first came out. And I couldn't find anythign at the time using the search bar, so I figured I'd open a general discussion. I guess I don't use the search bar well enough?

Bullshit

It doesn't mean you post can't be perfectly clear if it's short, but it adds little or nothing to the discussion. If you're going to write more, it can't possibly make things worse, unless you're an idiot.

It's not a matter of quality over quantity, it's a matter of having said enough to form a basis for discussion. I don't care how incredibly awesome your one liner is, it simply can't provide enough substance for someone to talk about.

What support do you have for that statement?

-There is a one liner that would provide ample discussion. A request for more information. I get it now, that its more of a joke than anything, and thats fine. The only issue I had with it was that it was making people bulk out their posts with extra meaningless words

I disagree. If something can be stated with brevity, then it should be. Though it may be more precise to use jargon, any effect and import that a message carries will be far more likely to be lost amidst a sea of junk and word salad; subsequently, the message will be obfuscated. One must always keep in mind that the written word is meant to be read and understood by other people.
