Well, I have sort of researched genetic engineering. I think that are pros and cons to doing this, in some cases it might help us, but in others it might do us more harm than good. So, what do you guys think?

I think that the good it will do us overpowers the harm by such a significant amount, that people will almost only see the positive sides of it.
I did a project last year on The Human Genome Project... it is very interesting stuff.

Being able to conquer many diseases like cancer and diabetes would be huge.  Being able to clone organs for those who need them would save millions of lives.  We could modify our food to be extremely nutritious, making us very healthy.  Not to mention, we would be able to get rid of some undesirable things via genetic modification.

And who knows.  We may even be able to manipulate aging genes and give everyone longevity.

There will, of course, be some fairly nasty side effects that could result in this, but I think the pros in this far outweigh the cons.  I mean, the fact that combustable engines could blow up and kill many didn't stop the late 1800 engineers from developing them, and look at where it's led society today.

Lastly, I do not think that genetic engineering is playing God any more than taking medicine such as insulin for diabetics.

We hold life to be sacred, but we also know the foundation of life consists in a stream of codes not so different from the successive frames of a watchvid. Why then cannot we cut one code short here, and start another there? Is life so fragile that it can withstand no tampering? Does the sacred brook no improvement?

I think its good for saving people from diseases and such.

But what about things like improving the intelligence of your children.  This will be most likely an expensive procedure only marketed to those who can afford it.

Who should decide who deserves genetics engineering?  Who decides who lives and who dies?

I don't know who it was who said it, but it was "In twenty years, having a child with a genetic defect will be a sin." It's true, science is progressing in leaps and bounds, and soon genetic diseases will be a thing of the past, like polio after the vaccine.

However, that is where my support of Genetic Engineering wavers significantly. Genetic disabilities are, at least in my opinion, firm moral footing. However, I am uneasy at the prospect of people making money by selling parents 'designer babies'. Not only do I find this morally disturbing, but I feel that it is also destroying the natural way of things.

Having a crippled body is not natural, and it is only right to spare the pain and discomfort when possible. However, whether your child has brown eyes rather than the blue eyes you wanted is completely natural, and shouldn't be tampered with.

And soon people will try to play God. And they are well on their way. It might seem a great thing now and all that, but man was never meant to intefere with the order of nature. I think it will only bring us harm in the end, however good it seems to society now.

I kind of agree with that and kind of don't. It would certainly be nice to grow/engineer organs and tissue but on the other hand sooner or later man will try to use it for evil. Eh, so I'm undecided on the issue.
