Sounds like extended sleep paralysis. Or similar to a coma state. That's scary and interesting...

I thought that was called sleep paralysis. Lots of people get it. Happens to my boyfriend sometimes and I now know when it's happening to him and I wake him up completely which he really appreciates.

I have had it about 3 times in my life and I found each time terrifying, although I did somewhat know what was going on.

I went through that a couple of months ago for a week..
It started when I was stressed, or depressed..but ever since I recovered from that 'mental instability', everything went back to normal..

Sleep paralysis, it is actually much more common than you would think. I get it regularly but mine come with crazy hallucinations (and not the nice drug triply kind).

The causes of numbness in any part of the body while sleeping may not always be readily apparent. In some cases, the loss of sensation can occur during the transition between sleeping and waking. Persistent experiences of this symptom may be an indicator of health problems that should be followed up with a visit to a physician.

Causes:

Numbness while sleeping can be among the causes of insomnia when the loss of sensation interferes with the ability to stay asleep through the night. Pinpointing the cause of the problem can lead to a viable solution. Possible causes include neurological and medical conditions, but sometimes the experience can be triggered through an unusual awareness of the sleep cycle.
