I think he said he used a combination of egg yolks, white glue and heavy duty hair spray. It stayed in for a couple days that way. But he had a Mohawk, so he could sleep with them in and there wasn't as much hair to deal with.

With a full head of hair that long though, without adding some pretty funky stuff to your hair (with the risk of it ruining your hair), I doubt you will be able to spike it.
