I am lucky in that I never had to wear headgear.  However I did snowboard while I had braces.  Catching the toe edge and smacking your face into the snow with them isn't fun.

I didn't even know that was still a thing. Can you take it off? If you can I would and wear a mouth guard.

Unfortunately there are still situations where headgear is needed.
Standard mouth guards don't fit. May try to cut one so it fits around the facebow. not sure how much it will help
thinking of a fullface helmet too

Hi, how did I miss the other snow related sports topic on this site?

I'm helmet shopping this year because it's a good idea, and because I like to get some air from time to time. You wouldn't be the first to wear a motocross helmet, but you might end up on Jerry of the Day.

That thing will draw a ton of attention. Better off with a regular snow helmet.

You could check Amazon here, Onthesnow buyers guides, or your local ski shop.

I got used to draw attention and if the helmet  hides the headgear and protects the face then that's ok
but I'm still a bit worried that such a fullface helmet may be too heavy. Perhaps I can try to combine a regular snow helmet with a face shield like this one

Headgear is something you can't avoid. Most people understand this. A lot more people are going to take note of improper gear at a resort than you might think.

Did you look at Jerry of the Day?

Maybe you could take this as an opportunity to slow down and work on finer points, if facial protection is the main point here. Best protection for me is not falling.

For your enjoyment, some random pictures of gapers from the internet.

This is a particular item which people find hilarious.

Here's a general guide.

That's not bad at all. Now just to wait until Thanksgiving comes around.

I'm looking at a Smith Aspect. A lot of the reviews for the Holt echoed ditching it for the Aspect as it's lighter, with more ventilation options and a better goggle clip. Also, the Aspect has an adjuster in the back for optimum fit, so you could wear a hat under it in really cold conditions.

I obviously don't want to spend much on a helmet, but I don't want to get the cheapest imitation of what I need either. It needs to be comfortable enough to wear from 9-4, not too hot on warm days, and not too cold on cold days.

Also, as unobtrusive as your gear is, I think a balaclava would cover it without being noticeable. Lots of people ski in them, myself included, but they can be hot at times.
