The whole goal of the search engines is to find relevant content to bring thier user to, and it does a fairly good job of that.

The more paragraphs of actual content you have, the more likely you are to hit on the search keyphrases the users are actualy searching for.

Content is king, and the more the better.

Add keywords to image alts,
Have content updated frequently (daily if possible)
Have many backlinks (preferably from high PR sites)
Submit to as many directories as you can (adding to backlinks)
Try and comply to web-standards
Include a site-map (I think Google provides a service for this)
Submit your website to search engines manually (they should get crawled faster)

Now this is something much better and more is create rss of your website and submit to rss directories. Create sitemap and submit that to google and other search engines. And yeah the backlinks are most important so try to get those as many as possible and related to your niche
