Sometimes, even the most diligent news network can make a mistake. But when two networks botch a report only minutes apart? Well, that qualifies as news itself.
Both CNN and Fox News reported that the Supreme Court struck down the centerpiece of President Obama's health care bill. But in reality, the court upheld the law, effectively allowing Obama's health care reform to survive.
In a 5-4 decision, the court ruled that the individual mandate, which requires most Americans to obtain health insurance starting in 2014, is constitutional. And yet, CNN correspondent Kate Boulduan initially filed a report to the contrary. She did, however, correct herself later and explain that the decision was "thick," "legally dense" and "very confusing."
Fox News, likewise, ran headlines boldly proclaiming that the individual mandate had been struck down and ruled "unconstitutional," but later admitted they got it wrong due to "conflicting information."
What do you think? Was the mistake understandable or just sloppy?

I was listening to the radio and the ruling was coming out a sentence or 2 at a time. First it looked like all of it was struck down, then some of it, then none. Plus the ruling was so confusing I'm not sure anybody really new what was going on. It wasn't agenda driven or even sloppy really, just confusing and hard to decypher.

Both networks are guilty of trying to "be first" with the news.

This.
They explained this case was a very complicated one, and in their haste to make headlines (this was certainly far more pressing an issue than any other Supreme Court decision in recent times, hence the pressure for headlines), they missed the point of the ruling. Try reading a primary source that is fairly complex very quickly and making a conclusion from it and you'll find yourself doing the same thing as Fox or CNN. I don't think this is an issue with the two networks as much as it's an issue inherent in the rush to get the news out as quickly as possible in general.

The initial comments made by Justice Roberts talked about how the "mandate" didn't pass muster under the "Commerce Clause", which was the thrust of the arguments put to the Court. No one even considered that there might be alternative avenues available. So when those first statements were made, the erroneous assumption was that the Court was striking down Obamacare.

If you consider these to be diligent news networks, then that's your first mistake. CNN and Fox don't report stories neutrally, like journalism is supposed to do. They all twist the stories to promote their own views. Fox gets caught doing this more than any news station, and there was an entire expose, with interviews of former anchors with Fox, who admitted to discarding research in their reports that might have promoted a different point of view. Take Jeremy Glick's story for example:

Bill O'Reilly is not part of the "news" division, his show is purely opinion. HIS opinion. Try again.

I'm sure there are a multitude of leftist critics of Fox, just like there are multitude of those on the right who lambast CNN... and MSNBC and all the other alphabet networks that present their "opinions" as news. There are very few true "journalists" any more.

Exactly, that was my whole point. I didn't mean to single out Fox so much, they all promote their own viewpoints.

It didn't appear to be your "whole" point since your argument seemed to be that Bill O'Reilly represents "Fox News".
There is a reason that Fox News has more viewers than the other networks combined... while they may lean more to the right, they do give the left a voice... that can't be said for the alphabet soup networks.

In this sort of stuff, they write two articles, one where Obama care passed and one where it didn't. This is so they can get it published online as fast as possible
In their haste to be first, they posted the wrong one. It's not the first time this has happened and it will not be the last

I don't quite remember what channel my dad had on, though I know they got it right. I just think it was amusing that BOTH channels got it wrong. I normally don't even watch the news because it pisses me off. I don't think anybody knows, really.
