on Wednesday.

From what I can tell, two separate teams think they've found it, or at least something that resembles it. I'm pretty excited to hear more about this story.

Source.

the comments on the daily mail article (which is a joke in and of itself unsurprisingly) are fucking hilarious.

but yeah, im sure its big news either way even if they weren't able to fully confirm it is the higgs boson itself.

Another article I read said that they're 99.99% certain it is, but that's only a four sigma and they need a five sigma

yeah i mean four sigma isn't bad but the more precise the more reliable the results are.

I've always been told that it has something to do with God or disproving god.

But okay, I must be mistaken.

The media invented the term 'God' particle because, as always, the media are fucking useless trying to report science so they must put some sort of a spin on it because they can't trust the public to understand science otherwise. It's only spread from there.

In actuality, however, it has nothing to do with the existence of (a) God or trying to prove/disprove it in any which way.

tl;dr the media are fucking toolbags

yeah exactly.

It's as monumental a discovery as relativity, apparently. But it 'sounds' dull to the layman so the media has to spin it.

Oh, I'd say more monumental. Relativity rationalises existence. The Higgs permits it.

The discovery of Higgs is fairly important, but the Standard Model is still not quite complete (gravity still being an issue)

We have 5-sigma http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-18702455

(4.9 for pedants, but two data sets combined produced 5)
