...by ripping out half its railroad infrastructure?

Yeah yeah, it's one of those guys talking about trains again. But I'm not here to be fanatical. This weekend I'm going to Washington DC by train from Indianapolis, which I've heard from many sources is a beautiful scenic route, especially through West Virginia. The thing is that I live an hour west of Indianapolis and have to get there first.

About two months ago, I went to Chicago by train, but had to go an hour west to Mattoon IL.

Rewind half a century, I could have got straight to Indianapolis, Chicago, Crawfordsville (and farther northeast), St. Louis, Evansville, or Louisville right from the heart of the town I'm in (which is Terre Haute). And there were multiple railroads that went to all those places, so there was competition.. and amazing service. Plus, all the smaller towns were served as well. You could eat and relax, there was no construction or traffic to worry about.

But whenever I try to talk about this, everyone flowcharts and calls me a "train loving hipster fag" or something to that effect. Really, am I the only one that enjoys the idea of getting from city center to city center without worrying about what to do with your car?

When I went to Chicago it was the greatest thing ever. Train pulled up at the platform, we got on, train kept going. Leaving Chicago, big station but the numbered platforms are all right next to each other.

No miles of security lines or invasive pat-downs.

Sherman ordered his men to tear up railway rails, heat them up, and twist them into loops, usually around trees. They called them Sherman's neckties. What a bad ass.

Funny. We're headed to Chi-town Wednesday for a few days and DC in August. How'd you like the cities?

Oh I know it's a shit hole, but it's no more of a shit hole than Detroit, which as two daily round trips through southern Michigan to Chicago. Shit-hole-ed-ness is not the point.

Nashville has absolutely nothing besides its perpetually clogged 10-lane interstates, and it's definitely not a shit hole.

I absolutely LOVE Chicago. Never been to DC though, or anywhere on the east coast (unless you count the Georgia beach I was at once four years ago, or Cape Canaveral FL). I'm really looking forward to it, and I recently talked to someone that has ridden the same train that I will be on who told me WV has some really amazing scenery.

DC is a cluster fuck just like Chicago. Aside from a few square blocks  in Chicago, I cannot stand that fucking place.

DC and surrounding cities are fairly nice. They have their bad spots, but DC is full of history and some cool buildings.

I actually went to a train museum/ train ride last weekend.  I don't know if I would use it to travel however.  I like having my car with me to travel.

Cops are wonderful assessment tools at a HazMat incident.
Send them in with a lit road flare.

If they don't pass out or blow up, it's safe.

Not really? A couple hundred bucks for a round trip flight? I guess my time is worth more than yours. I'd gladly pay a couple hundo to save driving all of that way for the convenience of flying. You'll learn that time really is money once you're older. Not trying to be condescending, either. Just priorities really come into focus when you have other things to do.
