So i dropped my WD passport hard drive the other week and though i might try restoring it. Well no luck and it has very impotent files as well as very personal files on it. So i can't send it away to get it opened and the files recovered but i really need it never the less.

FML.

You're not kidding. I got this drive for a birthday gift on top of it all. All cos my cables got tangled and it slipped off my glass desk. I wish i knew someone at one of the shops i could ask to use there system but i don't :/

But why cant you get it sent in and have the files recovered i mean the files on it cant be that bad

From my bank info to personal pic's and vids. I can't say they are that great just the same. I need to find a place that will only clone the hard drive and not read a single thing on the hard drive.

You're best off just going somewhere that you trust (since it has financial information on it) and just ignoring the fact that they will look at your pictures.

I know that's the problem, Call it paranoid.

Like i said i really wish i knew a person that works for a place like them that i could pay and I'd know he'd stay out of the stuff on it.

The other thing is, if they are trying to get files off, they will tend to try to open some random ones to be sure the files didn't appear to copy and really did copy. In other words, they have to verify that some files worked. I did this before for a client and told them straight up, I need to open a few files just to be sure they aren't corrupt. The client agreed. A few days later, I was checking through what I had copied off and there were photos of her teenage daughter in underwear. Obviously a very awkward situation for me, but what was I supposed to do? The file names were that of a digital camera, not something like "NUDETEEN.jpg" so it was a harmless mistake on my part. However, things like that do happen on accident, we aren't all pedophiles that creep on people's personal info.

Not to mention, if there is financial info on there and you notice some sketchy transactions AFTER sending the drive away, you'll know who to point the finger at.
