So I've been thinking about studying abroad, and I really want to go to Australia so I've been trying to find a school/program and found that Stony Brook University has a bunch of programs in Australia, one of them being at The Australian National University. I know nothing of the university and very little of the city (I basically know that it's one of the largest in the country). Anyone have any insight on either the university or the city?

my bad.

canberra? one of the largest? pffttthhbahahaaha

look, canberra's population is like, 358k
that's pretty much it for the "territory" canberra is. it's the capital of australia because the most populous cities couldn't agree where to have the national capital, so they created a little territory pocket in new south wales (which is, for the record, the largest city in australia - sydney, with like 7.5 mil) called the australian capital territory (duh) aka ACT
it's where parliament is, blah blah
and the university, a few other things
it's notorious for getting pretty cold and even a little snowfall

my aunt lives there. she's fat and addicted to anti-depressants.

the end.

First, 358k is huge...at least to an upstate NY girl like me. And second, according to Wikipedia, Canberra is the 8th largest city in the country. That ranks pretty high on my list.

wow okay
358k isn't big at all. and we have 6 states and 2 territories - yes, 8 - but it's like the second smallest capital city
next to mine which is like 127k

we don't have many big cities. we're a huge landmass with only a smidge of really habitable land. all our big populations are concentrated on the mid to south east coast - melbourne, sydney, brisbane, and canberra included.
the other capital cities, adelaide, perth, hobart and darwin, all have under 1.5 mil, the latter two with less than 2.1k

i'm not tryna discourage you, but saying as a national local, i know my shit

Yeah...I'm not sure what your point is about your states and territories...

358k is huge in my mind...where I'm from has a population of like 30k.

Canberra is a decent size city but trust me on this is is soo bloody boring you will kill yourself, no one i have known that has gone there including myself has said anything other then Nice place but incredibly boring.

The University though is one of the highest rated in the country.

TBH when it comes to Australia you have to live near a Large Capital city especially if your new to here.

If you hate living in overly huge cites but don't want it to be boring these are some places i would recommend:

-Cairns
-Townsville
-Mackay
-Noosaville(Sunshine coast)
-Coffs Harbour
-Newcastle
-Wollongong

Don't worry about anywhere west of the 3 main states, when it comes to Australia we kind of forget they exist.

The Difference being in America you can drive for a couple of hours and there would be several more, here its a big chunk of people then no signs of life for days.
