i have "GERD" too, and esophagitis (when your esophagus gets damaged from acid reflux), they gave me proton pump inhibitors (nexium/priolosec, etc) but they had horrible side effects so i stopped taking them....i got such bad headaches that were WAY more painful than heartburn!! i went on a low carb diet to lose weight and then my acid reflux went away , they have books on how a low-carb diet can help acid reflux, but i have some trigger foods that are low in carbs that i need to avoid (nuts, coffee, tomatoes) if i eat any starchy food i wake up with heartburn the next day... i think it is best to try to get rid of acid reflux through diet, you should figure out what your trigger foods are because the drugs they give you have really bad side effects...at least for me anyway!!
you really need to take care of it though because if you have really bad acid reflux, over time it damages your esophagus which can lead to cancer! it's a pretty low probability but it's still something to be concerned about
