Why do criminal scumbags always claim "entrapment" when they've been caught buying drugs off of an undercover cop? It isn't a reason for people to get let out of jail.

I mean, pedophiles don't get let off because a child dresses sexually, we always assume fault stays with the person who did something terrible.

Entrapment is a fucking stupid legal defense, IMO.

Discuss.

I agree. Who cares if it was an undercover cop. You still did something illegal. It's not like they made you do it or anything.

I think they are referring to the case that if you ask someone if they are a cop. They are legally bound to tell you if they are. So if ask some 1 your buying drugs off of, "Are you a cop" and they say no, you buy drugs and they arresst you. You could claim entrapment.

However, I dont know if there is any truth to that and if there is Im sure the cops have loopholes around it.
Oh well

This.
In most cases I do agree that entrapment is a stupid defense. But in cases like the above mentioned, I feel it is almost entirely valid.

It's only entrapment if you are forced into a choice either against your better judgement or because you believe it is for the greater good.

I don't think drug deals really are part of that.

And if a cop fails to identify themselves as such, that is a separate matter to the offence, it doesn't mean it is entrapment.

Do you not know what entrapment is? I don't see how this could possibly apply to the situation.

Entrapment is a fully logical defense. It's absurd for police to entice you to commit a crime and then punish you for doing to.

Undercover police are not required to tell you that they're police if asked. The presence or lack thereof of an undercover cop is irrelevant to entrapment. You can buy drugs from an undercover cop without it being entrapment, and you can commit a crime at the suggestion of a cop in uniform and claim entrapment as a defense.

OP seems to have a lack of understanding of what entrapment is all about. Entrapment is where the undercover cop basically encourages the person to commit a crime they wouldn't otherwise commit, where that crime wouldn't have been committed without the encouragement. An example would be if the undercover cop was selling drugs and the person was having second thoughts and decided not to, but the cop started hustling and putting pressure on the person to buy drugs which leads them to buy a few, that would be entrapment.
