Evidently, words or phrases like "dinosaur" "birthday party" "homes with swimming pools" and "expensive gifts" are bad to use in school, because they're "loaded, controversial words" that may upset some children For example, "dinosaurs" may upset the children of Young Earth Creationists.... Even though YCEs apparently point to dinosaurs as evidence of creationism. Jehovah's Witnesses don't celebrate birthdays, so that's out, and we all know that "Halloween" is only for evil pagans, so we don't wanna expose dem chilluns to that. Here's the complete list. I mean, some of them make sense; you don't want your 10-year-old to be examined on sexual intercourse, and I'm pretty sure that it's just common sense not to confuse detailed-football-play-by-play comprehension with general reading comprehension. But surely those are already covered by existing rules, if they even needed saying in the first place?

Crazy how we're willing to make people ignorant just to keep from offending them.

I don't see why we don't want 10 year olds to learn about sex. But anyway, this is ridiculous.
Well, I can see where it might not be out-of-place in a health class, although personally I think a stronger focus on puberty in general would be better at that age. I also got the impression from the article on Der Spiegel that this is more specifically aimed at English and maths tests, but I couldn't find any English-language source for that. Anyway, if that's the case the sex thing would make even more sense (there are probably better stories for a ten-year-old's close-reading exam than sexy ones).
Actually I change my mind. After reading the list twice I think it could do some good.

Strange how society has worked for generations (mostly) without banning words, yet suddenly this needs to be implemented to save the children. And anytime society "HAS'NT" worked has nothing to do with words lol

Even so, what good is it to tell them to absolutely not talk about sex outside of that particular class? They should be able to discuss it if they want/need to. America needs to make that transition. All of the west does, really, but America specifically does because sex is such a taboo subject there regardless of age. It's pathetic, really. I feel bad for America at this point. It's like watching a beached whale.

"You must understand that our civilization is so vast that we can't have our minorities upset and stirred. Ask yourself, What do we want in this country, above all? People want to be happy, isn't that right? .... Well, aren't they? Don't we keep them moving, don't we give them fun? That's all we live for, isn't it? .... Colored people don't like Little Black Sambo. Burn it. White people don't feel good about Uncle Tom's Cabin. Burn it. Don't step on the toes of the dog-lovers, the cat-lovers, doctors, lawyers, merchants, chiefs, Mormons, Baptists, Unitarians, second-generation Chinese, Swedes, Italians, Germans, Texans, Brooklynites, Irishmen, people from Oregon or Mexico. The people in this book, this play, this TV serial are not meant to represent any actual painters, cartographers, mechanics anywhere. The bigger your market, Montag, the less you handle controversy, remember that!" Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451
