As someone who has been getting into Photoshop for sometime now, I’m always looking for cheaper ways to do things. There is a project that I have been watching for some while now, and I think the time has come when it is ready to get a mention.

It's called Gimpshop and it's just a port of TheGimp into an interface where it works in similar ways to Photoshop. Now it isn’t perfect and its still in very early beta testing, but for all those who want to rid themselves of that copy of Photoshop they should not have, this is a good opportunity.

I have now been playing with this for several hours and have found once you get past a few of its quirks, it’s very good. Now yes, it hasn't the power of Photoshop, but it is far more than most people would ever need. I found The Gimp very difficult to get to grips with, whereas this is very simple.

You can get versions for Mac, Linux and Windows, so there is no excuse for not giving it a go.

Windows: Clicky (8meg)
Linux: Clicky (10meg)
Mac: Clicky (40meg) - Note, you will also need Apples X11 from here

I must be the only person that actually bought Photoshop.

There has been a windows version of TheGimp since the beginning of time. But glad to here you are trying it, that’s the idea.

Im really not sure what is so hard to use about the GIMP.

I suppose it was made for linux, though, and seems to work better on it.

GIMPshop is a good idea in theory, but the implimentation is quite awful.  Just use The GIMP with the original interface; it's really no more difficult to learn and it's a lot more stable.

You have to remember that we are talking about very early beta here, so don’t expect it to be release ready yet. I have shown it now because I think it is good enough for most people now.

Also, remember, I am suggesting this application for people who have been using for Photoshop illegally, but want to go clean. They will not want the frustration of having the learn to use TheGimp (which I have always disliked the interface for).

Shuichi, I’m not sure why that is a problem, as it still used TheGimps backend which I find good for hardware support. Does your tablet work with TheGimp? If it does then I think it must be a new bug.

I've just found it to be a lot less stable than The GIMP in its original form, and GIMPshop really doesn't do that good of a job of emulating Photoshop's interface anyway.  It arranges a few things and has a background window, but in terms of the actual features unique to Photoshop's interface, it really doesn't have anything new.  I just don't think it's worth the additional crashes and lost work to have an interface that's a tiny bit closer to photoshop.

Actually, as far as I know, no versions of The GIMP have support for pressure-sensitive tablets.  It'll work like a normal mouse, but the pressure-sensitivity is entirely lost, which makes the tablet a great deal less useful.  This is one of the (very, very few) cases where Photoshop really is the better choice.
