I personally think that the things that give life meaning are family, friends, other people you can rely on, being compassionate and giving to those close to you.  Material possessions beyond the absolutely essential don't mean anything.  When you die, do you take any of that with you?  Does it mean anything?  Life consists of people-related memories, not memories to do with designer labels and cars.

HBO has some truly exceptional series at times. This is one I would consider amongst them.

To add a bit of context: Doesn't Nate's family own a mortuary, or funeral home? If my memory is intact, I could humanistically try to empathize with his feelings.

When one is surrounded by death for so long...one of life's extreme irreversibles...with how much ease would one take on a feeling of irrefutible meaninglessness?
