I have been getting rather fed up of the low quality of anything done in audacity for some time now. As such, have been wondering if anyone knew of any freeware (open source is always good) that is on a similar par with features but has a higher quality output. I am quite willing to sacrifice features for quality here as as soon as i play any song worked on on a decent system (or even my new earphones) it just goes to pieces.

the low quality is due to your sound card, get a better sound card to get better sound duh

Lets pretend that i do know what I'm talking about and i have a very decent card, one capable of producing far higher results than i am getting. I have done a fair bit of work on this, trust me when i say I'm looking at software. If you don't want to help, fine, just don't post, I'm not interested in some smartarse kid who thinks they know it all trying to tell me how wrong i am from a standpoint of lack or knowledge.

I'd like to vouch for the fact that Audacity does tend to produce some unusual artifacts in one's sound, and it annoys me.  In particular, using the equalizer produces what sounds like distortion even when this shouldn't be the case. I'm afraid I haven't found a usable alternative, though.

There is a linux sound editor called Sweep, that looks like it may be better than Audacity.

But I am not sure, I know little about audio editing.
