So my Norton expired a lil while ago, and I didn't renew it. I downloaded AVG and left my expired Norton running at the same time. Recently I started getting all of these warnings from Norton about port scans and other security problems (probably every 5 minutes when I was online). I finally got around to uninstalling Norton, and turning my Window's firewall back on. Am I protected from all of these port scans and people trying to get into my computer?

I have the same question. My Norton expired a few months ago, and it still runs the scan sometimes. And asks if I should allow it to run a program and a few times, it says, "Your computer has been blocked from an attack"

Norton will protect from the older viruses (and other things). But anything newer will not be caught because Norton doesnt know it exists. But if u have a firewall it might catch some stuff

After your Norton expires, it will still run, but will not protect you from the new viruses that are being created every day.

I suggest that you either Re-new or buy another virus scan service.  Having your computer UN-protected can be dangerous, so you should really have a service renewal to make sure that valuable data such as credit card numbers and passwords aren't being key logged or the such.

So, you are protected a bit, but in my opinion, not adequate.

Might be worth getting a decent free firewall such as Zone alarm. You are still ok, amost nothing will ever come of port scans and the windows one will stop most of them.

Uh oh. New problem.

I decided to run ad-aware for the first time in a few weeks. Less than a minute into the scan it will finds something critically wrong, then my computer will instantly restart itself! This is really scary considering my computer can't restart!! (my hp has a sp2 compatibilty issue that can't be fixed without a format). Weird, eh?

What should I do? A format is actually sounding pretty good right now...

Do you have any more information about this sp2 problem? As i have not seen anything about HP's before. I have to say, this does sound like a re-install if this problem is one that can't be fixed. There is never a good time for a re-install, but this sounds like as good a chance as you will get.

Do you have any more information about this sp2 problem? As i have not seen anything about HP's before. I have to say, this does sound like a re-install if this problem is one that can't be fixed. There is never a good time for a re-install, but this sounds like as good a chance as you will get.

I was actually pretty happy once i reformatted. I think form now on I'll just do it every 6 month or so.

The restart problem is the result of not knowing about a patch that I needed before installing sp2. But I can live with my computer being unable to restart, haha. I'll fix it if I ever do a reformat.

I'm just wonder why ad-aware crashes and makes my computer restart every single time I start a scan...

I sure did! But it's fixed now. After some extensive google searching I discovered that the problem was caused by that damn winfixer ad-ware. I finally got rid of it and now I am a firefox convert for life.

How about unistalling SP2 and getting the patch and then reinstalling SP2??

How about getting an ad-ware removal program or getting that firewall that Pleaseremove told you about.

Also if you want, you could get Norton Anti virus 2005 SE from Google, in their Google Pack.

I have already uninstalled SP2 in the past. It fucked up my computer and I had to reformat anyway. Way to much hassle just to be able to RESTART. Seriously, shutting down my computer and then hitting that big blue button is not much work.

If you read the entire topic you'd know I already have ad-aware, and that I said I'd check out the firewall.

Good suggestion, but I'm perfectly happy with AVG at the moment. I'm especially happy that it won't pop up every single day asking me to buy a subscription.
