That statement reeks of ignorance. The Romans killed Jesus because he was teaching against the state religion. It just so happened that the Roman governor of what is now Israel, Pontius Pilot, was Jewish.

They hit him up on a technacality that the Roman authorities didn't seem to care too much about in his case, but public pressure forced Pilot's hand.
