banal, but still...

The approach of my 20th birthday has served as a biting reminder of my mortality, and I've been thinking more often about death recently.  What scares most people here about it? The sheer breadth of eternity--The earth will fall into the sun in about 5 billion years, shortly after which the sun will explode, and its pieces will form a new star some billion years later, and the process will repeat--during which I will have no conciousness, terrifiies me.

Ha yeah I think the same way... I don't want to pass on but I know I will, I just don't want to right now... It freaks the shit out of me, damn I just freaked myself out... *thinks hapy thoughts*... I mean you can't fight the inevitable... I mean I know I am young and have my whole life... It's just the thought that scares me, maybe I'll live forever, ha.

I don't know why I freak myself out about it, but when people around me die it's like I'm sad for a bit but then life goes on, but I just don't want my own life to end... It's weird, and I don't know why I feel like it.

The short duration of life and the many ways I could easily be killed scares me more.

What is scary about nonexistance? The lack of pie? Do you sweat bullets every night before you fall asleep? Is it simply the different state of affairs you'll find (or not) yourself in? Please elaborate.

You know, it's that feeling exactly which has made me learn to appreciate every moment of exhistance, because one day, I know it will be all over. I don't think about that, I just try to realise how great every moment of my life is, even if it's not so great, I'm still feeling some emotion, I'm still seeing, I still have conciousness, I still can absorb all the things in life there are to enjoy.

Why not take on a religion?
Because then he'd have a bunch of people yelling at him telling him religion is just a crutch for the weak.

Personally, I don't see what's so scary about death. It happens, every day. It's going to happen to everyone, no matter what. I'm not afraid of it. If someone dies, yeah, mourn a little, but then realize, it's over, you can't do anything about it, so you best start moving on.

I agree with PHo.  Death isn't anything to be afraid of.  It is just a stage of life.  The only reason we fear it is because we fear the unknown.  We know what is in this world and in this life and beyond death, we are left with only questions.  Still, that is know reason to go out and be "an explorer of the unknown," so don't go out and kill yourself, just enjoy the time you have now and find out what adventures lie ahead in the enivitable future!

I don't fear death, I know that it is inevitable. At the same time though, I have come to the realization that I haven't got that much out of life, and that maybe trying to enjoy it a little more instead of being an apathetic jerk would make it a little more pleasant.

I'm looking to add some meaning to my existence.

To be honest I fear the death of loved ones far more than I fear my own death.  I know that when I'm dead, I won't feel anything.  But if a loved one were to die I'd feel awful and grieve for a long time.

I just can't conceive the idea of not existing, not being able to think and just not... being.  I can't understand it, and therefore it scares me.  More than anything else.

When I was younger I used to lie awake at night thinking about death and crying, but I figure that since I can't do anything about it the best I can do is to get the most enjoyment out of life that I can and try to forget that one day I have to die.

It would be a whole lot easier if I was religious.

My body is hardwired to trigger an automatic response of fear to warn against that which might end my life. However, do I fear death on a rational level? To burgle the thoughts of Socrates, it is either a change in place or like unto entering into a dreamless sleep. Who fears a dreamless sleep?

ugh, death continues to scare the hell out of me, to the point that i've tried the self-infliction of it to 'get it over with' (yeah, total logic, i know ). course, i've also done some knocking on the doors of various religions, but it's no use to half-heartedly pretend to believe.

what scares me is that there is so much time and i only get a tiny bit, then that's it, then there's absolutely nothing, as far as my consciousness is concerned. and i can't stop it no matter what. i get pissed off at people who claim no worry regarding death. i think it's pure envy.

good to know i'm not the only one whose gotten horribly upset over it.

i'm putting a lot of effort into the living-in-the-moment lifestyle, it's mildly rewarding but no cure.

ah, the woes of being mortal. sucks that galapagos tortoises get twice the time and don't even notice.

what proof do you have that the world is going to end anyway, that you will drift into unconsiousness forever. No one knows what will happen in the afterlife. Don't fear death, I say embrace it. I love life and everything, but take death as a new learning experience. Everyone goes through it at one point. I think that death is a release from the pain and torture of the world. Enjoy life but welcome death with open arms as a way to bring you to something new and better.

Oh, fun, a question I like.

I suppose the only thing about death that scares me is the fact that I could, in fact, be wrong about what I believe happens after. I don't have a very strong sense of faith, nor do I believe in an "afterlife." But lately, I've been reading way too much Kierkegaard.
