its my understanding that the SAT and ACT are accepted equally. Just ACT is more of a west coast thing, SAT is more of an east cost thing. I personally took both (SAT 3 times, ACT 1 time) and got pretty close scores on both. Just to warn you, I haven't taken either in at least 3 years, so I might not know the latest info.

yea, its really just a regional thing. most kids on the east coast will never take the act, most kids on the west coast do

The ACT is like an achievement test. The SAT is like an aptitude test. In admissions officers' eyes, neither is better than the other. They look at both on the same level, even though they are structurally very different. I personally think the ACT is a better indicator of success in college. If you do well in high school and learn a lot, you will do well on the ACT. On the other hand, the SAT has pretty basic math/reading/writing, but the questions are tricky. IQ usually correlates to SAT scores. That does not mean a college would look highly of someone with a high SAT score over someone with a high ACT score...the person with the good SAT score could be smart as hell, but extremely lazy - a slacker.
