So my brother and I, along with 3 other people, are looking for an aprtment closer to where we work.

We saw an ad on craigslist for a 4br/2b listed at $2500 a month. We showed up for a viewing, and were told by the on-site manager that "the owner JUST raised the price to $2700, but I'll give you the $2500 price I listed."

Okay, this is already crap, but whatever. So, we turn in our applications, our $25 (each) credit fees, and wait for a bit. We set up a time to meet the manager and the owner together, and we are told by the owner that the price is $2700. I'm thinking, "what the fuck?". I ask him about the $2500 price, and he said, "There is no way I am renting this out for $2500." and that was the end of that. I would have pressed the issue, but the other 4 guys were glaring at me to not ruin it for them. Fucking doormats, they won't assert themselves at all. Whatever.

Is that even legal? I'm trying to look up the laws on a "bait a switch" like that, but I can't find anything relating to housing. I'm under the impressed that the advertised price must be honored whether it's for housing or groceries.

Sounds like a classic case of 'bait and switch', but Im sure they bypass it by putting a disclaimer somewhere in atom sized font saying they reserve the right to change the prices without notice

Maybe. I'm only pissed off because I wouldn't have put forth the credit check fee if I had heard the "real" price.

First off, what's a credit check fee?

Wow, that's a total load of crap.

Did you check this site out?

http://www.caltenantlaw.com/

I personally would have brought it up, and if the Landlord had a problem with it, I would have just kept on looking.

Also, a word of advice, every time someone checks your credit score, it goes down a bit. This is why when you are looking for an apartment (and to skip the BS fee) its to go ahead and get your credit score yourself, print it out, and make copies. That way you don't have to risk your score and you don't keep getting docked the BS fee.

A pretty small thing you turn in with your application (aka application fee) used by them to pay for obtaining a copy of your credit report, or whatever, to make sure you're not in very bad monetary standing.

I didn't trust a word he said, it's these 4 doofuses that are just saying, "It's not illegal! It can't be! Besides, it's our fault, we didn't check the ad carefully enough!"

Grrrr. The more I read, the more this seems like bullshit. The worst part is, I can't do much unless I'm 100% positive, or else these other 4 guys will say "OH NO DON'T RUIN IT!"

   * Real estate agents often use the bait and switches to move undesirable apartments. They advertise a great apartment at a low rent. When you come to see it, they tell you it was just rented, but they have an even "better" deal to show you next door, on another floor or nearby. The apartment usually turns out to be smaller and more expensive than the one you wanted. Don't deal with any agent who pulls this scam on you.

I should just back out now.
